WAGON-TO P.
Application filed July To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. Plums, of Arkadelphia, in the countyof Clark and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Sliding Bow-Top for Wagons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved bow-top for wagons which can be removed from the wagon-box or replaced on the same very easily and readily.
The invention consists in the combination, with a wagon-box having longitudinal pockets on the sides, of a removable wagon-top provided with base-rails adapted to be passed into box, which pockets can be fixed or removable.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal elevation of a wagon-box provided with my improved sliding top, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation'of the same.
On the outer surface of each side of the wagon-box A a horizontally-preyeeting longitudinal strip, B, is secured, which is provided at its outer edge with an upwardly-projecting grooved flange, O, the top of which is about flush with the top edge of the box. Base-rails D, adapted to pass into the longitudinal pockets on the sides of the wagon, have secured to them the ends of bows In, which bows are united by longitudinal pieces F. The skele- A .oQQGlFIQ-AHQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,978, dated November 11, 1884.
10, 1884. (No model.)
ton of the bow-top thus formed can be provided with any suitable cover, either fixed or detachable, as may be desired. The bows E may have any desired shape and may be made of any suitable material.
To hold the top on the box A the base-rails D of the top are passed from the front or rear end of the box into the longitudinal pockets formed by the strips B and flanges O on the sides of the box. -The top can thus be placed and held on the box or removed from the same very easily and rapidly.
The pockets can be permanently secured 011 the wagon-box; or they can be held to the same by suitable devices.
The above-described removable top can be used on all kinds of vehicles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a wagon-box having longitudinal pockets on the sides, of a wagon-top frame provided with bottom rails I adapted to be passed into the said pockets, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a Wagon-box having longitudinal pockets formed on the sides by the strips B and grooved flanges O, of the bows E, united by the baserails D, substair tially as herein shown and described.
CHARLES R. PARKS.
