Be it known that l, SAMUEL H. SUMMnnscALEs,asubject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of l/Vinnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Metallic lVheel, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention relates generally to metallic wheels, and, more particularly, it is directed to an improved rim construction especially intended for use with wheels such as described and claimed in my pending application No. 637,492, filed July 8, 1911.
The principal object ot' my invention is to provide a new and improved means of securing the sections of a metal rim together, whereby such rim will withstand rough usage and will efficiently perform its duties.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings, forming part of this speci* fication, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the completed wheel; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the construction for joining sections of the rim; Fig. 3 is a detailed view; Fig. 4 is a perspective of the reinforcing or bracing element which engages the adjacent ends of the sections.
The wheel comprises any suitable huh l and rim 2, with the spokes 3 and braces 4. These parts are all preferably of metal, the rim 2 being channeled, whereby the opposite sides are provided with flanges 5. The rim is provided with a number of openings 6 varying in number and size depending on the rim, these openings being preferably formed by cutting the material and bending the cut portion 7 inwardly, as shown particularly in Fig. 1. Such construction of the rim or tire increases the tractive effort since the tendency to slip is avoided, the relatively soft material of the road or pavement over which the wheel is passing engaging in these openings 6, thereby providing, as it were, fulcrums about which the wheel successively moves.
The adjacent ends of the sections of the rim or tire 2, andthe method of joining them, are shown particularly in Fig. 2. Each end of the adjacent sections is pro- `vided with a recess 6, the depth of each of which is substantially one-half the length of the opening 6, the combined depths being therefore equal to the length of the openings G, the material removed in order to form these recesses being inwardly bent and shown at 7. These inwardly bent portions adjacent the meeting ends of the sections cooperate with the brace shown particularly 1n Fig'. 4 vin maintaining the sections in en gagement. This brace is preferably of U- shaped construction, embodying the intermediate portion 8 and the sides 9, the width of the intermediate portion being substan tially equal `to the distance between the insides of the flanges 5 of the rim; the sides 9 are provided with openings 10 adapted to register with other openings formed in the flanges 5, rivets or bolts 12 being passed through these registering openings in order to hold the brace securely in position be tween the flanges. The intermediate p0rtion 8 of the brace is provided with an opening 11, the dimensions of which are such that when the brace is positioned as indicated, the inwardly bent portions 7 at the adjacent ends of the tire sections will engage within opposite portions of this opening, whereby such engagement tends to strengthen the joint and at the same time y to properly position the brace between the flanges.
