CONVEYER- CHAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I IVILLIAM M. VVILKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conveyer-Chains; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in conveyor-chains and has for its object certain improvements in the construction thereof which will appear hereinafter in the specification and claim.
The features of my invention are hereinafter set forth and explained and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a section of a conveyer chain constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line mzv in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a modified form of constructing a conveyer chain embodying my inven tion. Fig. 1: is a plan view of a modified form of construction of the scraper mechanism of my improved conveyer chain. Fig. 5 is a side View in elevation of the same.
In these drawings A, indicates the links forming the side strands of my improved conveyer chain, which links are secured together by means of the pins, B, which pass through holes in the ends of said links, A, and are secured therein by the heads, I), on one end and preferably by cotter-pins, Z), passing through holes in the opposite ends thereof, as shown in Fig. 5. The links, A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, are preferably formed by bending a piece of flat steel of the required width and thickness into U- shaped form and then flattening the closed portion of the bow up close together as shown, and then punching or boring pinholes through the open and closed ends thereof. In this manner I am enabled to form a chain link for the purpose set forth of double strength, which links may be packed in barrels 'or boxes. for shipment, and which, together with the other parts hereinafter described, may be assembled by the purchaser. The bolts or pins, 13, may be made of any desired length, according to they width of chain desired. Upon the bolts or pins, B, between the side strands of the chain I place scrapers, C, having a flat front face, 0, which preferably over-laps the square ends, a, of the inner arms of the links, A. The flat scrapers, 0, have a cylin drical extension, 0, through which the pins or bolts, B, may pass, and against which the sprockets on the driving wheel mechanism (not shown) engage for the purpose of propelling the chain.
In Fig. 2, I show another form of constructing the side strands of the conveyer chain, in which each of said strands are constructed of links, A,of a single thickness of metal having holes in the ends thereof through which the bolts or pins, B, may be passed, with the scrapers, C, on said bolts, B, between said side strands.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I show a form of scraper similar to that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, with the exception that the fiat scraping surface 0, thereon does not overlap the ends, a, of the links, and in lieu thereof I con struct on the upper side of the scrapers, G, an upwardly and outwardly projecting lip, 0 which overlaps the upper side of the end of the link, A, horizontally, instead of overlapping, vertically, the end thereof as in Figs. 1 and 2. The object of the overlap ping of the end portions of the links, A, or A, by the vertical scraping surface, a, or by the lip, c is to prevent the scraper, C, from turning on the bolt or pin, B, during the operation of the chain.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved conveyer chain, the manner of its assembling, and its operation are so obvious that further description thereof is unnecessary.
Therefore what. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
