GRAIN-CAR DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANDREW G. OLSON and JOHN A. Dons," citizens of the United States, residing at Elbow Lake, in the county,'of Grant and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Car. Doors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in grain car doors and more particularly to that class of doors which are sectioned.
An object of this invention is the provision of a sectional car door, in which tight joints are provided between't-he respective sections, and between the door and the door posts, so that leakage of the grain from the car is prevented.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a. sectional car door, in which no nails or other similar fastening devices are passed through the sections and the door posts, so that the provision of new doors and posts will not be required as often as heretofore.
A still further object of thisinvention is the provision of a sectional door for grain cars, in which the lower section of the door is provided with outlet openings so thatthe pressure of the grain against the inner face of the door may be diminished, and the door may be readily removed from the door open 1n g With these and other objects in view, our
invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter mdre fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an inside elevation of a portion of a car showing the door applied. Fig. 2 is an outside elevation of a portion of a car showing the door applied. Fig. 3 is an inside elevation of a portion of the car showing the door removed. Fig. 4 is a section'on the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section showing the cap removed from one of the outlet openings.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a portion of' to cover the inner faces and the opposed faces of the door posts to protect them from Wear and to reinforce and strengthen the posts. The portion of the bars which engage the inner faces of the posts are provided with horizontal open ended slots 5, and the posts adjacent the slots 5 are undercut or grooved horizontally, as at 6, to provide recesses between the posts and the bars.

In the accompanying drawings, we have illustrated upper sectio-ns7 and lower sections 8, the sections being provided with longitudinal flanges 9 which are adapted to overlap and provide tightjoints between the sections of the door to preventdeakage'of grain from the car. The slots 14 in the plates are adapted to extend beyond the opposite edges of the door, so that the outer ends of the bolts 15 may engage in the outer ends of the slots 14 and the belts moved inwardly of the slots so that the heads 16 thereof may engage in the recesses formed by the grooves 6 between the door posts and the plates 4. The bolts 15 are provided with angular portions 17 adjacent the heads 16 thereof, the angular portlons 17 being adapted to engage the slots 5 formed in the bars4, to prevent turning of the bolts relatively to the bars. When the bolts 15 are moved to their inward positions in the registering slots in the sections of the door and bars 4, handled nuts 18 or burs 18 are threaded on the bolts against the outer face of the sections of the door to securely hold the door in position against the posts.

If desired, cotter pins 20may be passed through the bolts after the nuts 18 have been threaded thereupon to prevent accidental removal of the nuts from the bolts, thereby rendering the bolts non-removably mounted in the slots 1.0, being confined within the said slots by the edge portions of said plates 11, while being adapted to move sutiiciently far therein to disengage the heads of the bolts from the slots of the bars. 4.
The lower section 8 of the doors are formed with outlet openings 21 and secured to the inner face of the lower section adjaeent the openings, are reinforcing and wearing plates 22, the plates being formed with threaded flanges 23 which project within theopenings in the door, and threadably connected to the flanges 23 are caps or covers 24 for closing the openings. Chains 25 arsecured at one end of the lower section 8 of the door adjacent the openings therein, the opposite ends of the chains being suitably connected to the caps 24: to prevent loss of the caps when they are removed from the flanges 23.
In the practical use of our car door, the several sections of the door are arranged within the car so that the slots 10 therein register with the slots 5 in the bars, whereupon the bolts 15 are engaged in the slots so that the heads 16 of the bolts are disposed in the recesses between the bars and the posts, whereupon the nuts 18 are mounted upon the bolts to bear against the plates 11, and the doors are maintained in position. It willbe seen that the sections of one of the doors do not entirely close the opening at the upper end thereof and the car may be filled with grain or other material through this opening. When it is desired to remove the grain or other material from the car, the caps 24 are removed from the threaded flanges 23 in the outlet openings, so that a portion of the grain in the car may pass therefrom by gravity, and the pressure relieved from the door so that the sections thereof may be readily removed by unscrewing the nuts sufiiciently to allow the bolts to be moved in the'slots so that the heads may be disengaged from the bars 4.
It will be seen that with a door constructed in accordance with our invention, the'sections thereof may be readily fastened to the door posts without the use of nails which pass through the posts and the door, and that the dOOr may be repeatedly used without damage to either the door posts or the sections of the door.
It will be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the use of angle bars but that we may use ordinary slottedplates to form recesses to receive the heads of the bolts, and that the grain door can be constructed of either wood or metal, or both.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a vehicle having a door opening and door posts, slotted bars secured to said door posts, a door adapted to close said opening, said door having slots formed therein adapted to register with the slots in'said bars, plates secured to said door and having slots therein, the slots in said plates and in said door registering with the slots in said bars, bolts arranged in said slots, nuts engaged upon said bolts and bearing uponsaid plates, and arcuate ribs formed on said plates and surrounding said. nuts, as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with a car having a door opening, vertical bars secured at the sides of the door opening and having horizontal slots intersecting their outer edges, a door adapted to close said opening, said door having horizontal slots adjacent to its opposite vertical edges and normally in registry with the slots in said vertical bars, said slots of the door being closed by the edge portions of said door, and bolts projecting through said slots and adapted to be moved sutficiently longitudinally of the slots to disengage the bolts from the slots of the bars, the movement of the bolts being limited by said edge portions of the doors, so that the bolts are always confined within the slots of said door.
