END-GATE FOR WAGONS.

Be it known that I GURDON H. WILLIAMs. of Greensburg, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates for Wagon- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertainsto make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in end-gates for wagon-boxes; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the end-gate closed, and shows also the adjacent parts of a wagoirbox. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing the end-gate partially opened. Fig. 3 is a rear view in elevation of the end-gate. Fig. 4 is a side view in elevation of the plate. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of the part F.

A represents the sides and B the bottom of the wagon-box. The side boards are pro vided, in the usual manner, with the cleats a, that, when the parts are in position, embrace the ends of the end-gate. A rod, a, passes through the side-boards in the usual manner, and prevents these boards from spreading.

The end-gate is double or of two boards in thickness, and the inner part consists of the pieces 0 and G, that are hinged together at c. The outer part consists of the pieces D and D,thatjoin.on the oblique line d, and the former is rigidly attached to the inner part, (J, and the latter is attached to the part 0 and overlaps some distance on the part 0. Vertical cleats d are secured on the outside in the position shown, that prevent the end-gate from splitting. To the part D is secured the broad plate E, that overlaps the joint and extends some distance onto the part D. This plate 011 the overlapping part has transverse slots 6, through which the staples or eyebolts 6 protrude, that are secured to the parts D and O.

F is a plate bent in the form shown in Fig. 5, and provided with the slots f, and with rounded ends forming pins f The part F is secured to the plate E by bolts or rivets that pass through the elongated holes f, by means of which the part F may he slid up or down as far as the elongated holes will permit. \Vhen the part F is elevated, the pinsf are above the cent-er of the slots 0, and when depressed the pinsf pass through the protruding ends of the staples or eyebolts e and lock the endboard.

The parts D and D are of such length that they fit snugly between the cleats a of the side-boards, and the parts 0 and O are of such Width that they slide under the rod a, and the end-gate is thus held from rising. By raising the part F the pins f are disengaged from the eyebolts or staples e, and by drawing the center part of the end gate rearward, as shown in Fig. 2. the end-gate is disengaged from atleast one side board, and may be easily removed and as easily returned to its position and locked.

The device is cheap, simple, and durable, and will be found a com enient end-gate for all ordinary purposes.

What I claim is- An end-gate for a wagoirbox, consisting of the parts 0 and G, ol'unequal length and hinged together, and of such width as to slide under the rod a, and the outside pieces, D and D,
