SAMUEL V. KELLY, OF TAZEVVELL COURT-HOUSE, VIRGINIA.
WAGON-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,975, dated July 20, 1886.
Serial No. 202,301. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL V. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tazewell Court-House, in the county of Tazewell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a top plan View. Fig. 2 is bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is an end elevation; and Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section on line 00 00, Fig. 3.
My invention relates to wagon-boxes; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the bottom of the wagon-boX, which is made in two longitudinal sections, 13 and 0, each of which is provided on its under face with three lateral cleats, D, E, and F, and D, E, and F, the inner ends of which project beyond the inner or meeting edges of said bottom sections, B O, and overlap said sections on their under faces. The cleats D, E,and F are each rabbeted or recessed in one of their sides at G, to receive a metal arm, H,which is provided near its inner end, in its upper edge, with a V-notch, I, to receive the laterally-projecting end of the pin K in the adjacent cleat D, E, and F. At the middle of its length each bottom section is pro vided with an angle-iron, M, the arms M of which are secured to the under faces of said bottom sections by bolts or rivets N, and at their outer ends thearms M are provided with two parallel Vertical arms, 0 O, with spaces P between them for the reception of the lower ends of the angle-irons Q Q, se cured to the outer faces of the side-boards R R at the middle of their lengths, the lower ends of said angle-irons Q Q projecting below the lower edges of the side-boards RR a distance a little more than equal to the thickness of the bottom board and the arms M of the angle-irons M. At their ends, in their meeting edges, the bottom sections are rabbeted at S S to form recesses S for the reception of the threaded lower ends of the vertical strap-irons T T,which are secured to the inner faces of the end-gates U U, and project below the lower edges of the same, said threaded lower ends being provided with thumb-nuts V, by which the end-gates are locked in place. Let into their upper edges, at opposite ends of the end-gates, are the brackets or hook-arms \V WV, the hooks proj ecting downwardly from the outer ends of said arms. These end-gates U U slide between vertical cleats X X, secured to the inner faces of the side-boards near the ends of the latter, and the upper edges of the side-boards are provided between the upper ends of the vertical cleats with rectangular notches Z, which receive the projecting ends of the hook-arms W W when the end-gate is in place.
To remove the end-gates, the thumbnuts V must be loosened and turned down far enough to permit the bracket-arms to be lifted from the notches Z. As soon as the end-gateshave been removed, the side-boards may be unhooked from the angle-irons, or the bottom sections may be disconnected and the wagonboX stored away in a very small compass until it is desired to use it, when it can be as quickly and conveniently put together again.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with the bottom section having projecting under cleats with inwardly-projecting hoolearms, and the bottom section having projecting under cleats, laterally-projecting pins for engaging said hookarms, of the angle-irons with vertical parallel arms at their outer ends, the notched sideboards with vertical parallel end cleats on their inner faces, and the hook-irons at the middle of their outer faces, and the end-gates with hook-arms on their upper edges, and the downwardly -projecting threaded arms, and
the thumb nuts thereon, substantially as spec-iends, and the vertical middle threaded irons, IO fied. 7 and the thumb-nuts, substantially as specified. 2. The combination, with the sectional bot- In testimony whereof I affix my signature tom having under cleats with hook-arms, enin presence of two witnesses. 5 gaging-pins, and angle-irons with vertical parallel arms, of the side-boards with the outer SAMUEB KELLY' angle-irons at their middles, and the verti- XVitnesses: cal end cleats on their inner faces, the end- EDWARD C.
