S. D. FRY. Wagon End Gate.
No. 241,956. Patented May 24, I881.
Wizzwwea, I 95, M46
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN D. FRY, OF ATTIOA, INDIANA.
WAGON EN D-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,956, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed December 6, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, STEPHEN D. FRY, ofAttica, in the county of Fountain, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon End-Gates and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of vehicles; and it has for its object to provide an improved endgate and scoop-board for the same, as morefully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the apparatus and mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a wagon, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a detached sectional View, showing the mechanism for fastening the end-gate; and Fig. 4 represents a detached view of the scoop-board.
The letter Aindicates the wagon-body,which may be of any approved construction, which may be provided with the usual side extensions, B.
0 indicates the end-gate. This is provided with side pieces, D, which are adapted to slide in and out of the rear of the wagon-body to open and close the gate. The said side pieces are provided with longitudinal slots E, for the bolts F, which extend'through suitable openings G in the sides of the body, the said bolts being screw-threaded at their outer ends and provided with clamping-levers, by means of which the end-gate may be secured in any desired position. Theinner ends of the sidepieces are beveled, as indicated by the letter I, to prevent the contents from binding or being held by said side pieces.
The letter K indicates the scoop-board,which is provided with vertical braces L, extendingbe- (ModeL) low its lower edge, the ends of which are adapted to set in the beveled recesses M in the bottom of the wagon and hold the said board at its lower edge. The said scoop-board is adapted to fall back, as indicated in Fig.2,when the gate is drawn out, so as to form an inclined surface for convenience in shoveling out the contents of the wagon. When the contents are to be dumped the scoop-board is removed, so as to permit the said contents to fall directly out of the end of the wagon.
In some instances the side pieces of the endgate may be provided with two slots each, one near the top and the other near the bottom, the lower slot being provided with the bolt-fastening above mentioned and the upper slots with a transverse bolt extending transversely across the wagon.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the wagon-body, of the gate provided with side pieces adapted to slide in and out of the wagon, and suitable fastening devices, as and for the purposes specified.
2. In combination with the wagon-body, the end-gate having slotted side pieces, and the clamping-bolts, substantially as specified.
3. In combination with the wagon-body, the end-gate and its side pieces, beveled, as described, as and for the purposes specified.
4. In combination with the sliding end-gate,
the scoop-board having projecting braces or lugs adapted to set in suitable recesses in the bottom of the wagon, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of November, 1880.
STEPHEN D. FRY.
