IMPROVEMENT IN END-GATES FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Lettrs Patent No. 152,005, dated June 16, 1874; application filed March 6, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. PARTRIDGE, of Adrian, county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tail-Boards for Vagons, of-which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a tail-board for wagons, made in two pieces, and hinged to the sides of the wagonbox, the one piece formed with an arm to overlap the other piece, and fastened thereto by a hook or other suitable fastening device, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the rear end of a wagon-box, showing my tail-board therein closed, and Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the tail-board partially open.
A A represent the side pieces of a wagonbox, to which my improved tail-board is hinged. This tail-board is made in two parts, B and 0, one part being hinged to one side, and the other part to the other side. The
two parts B and 0 are made of unequal thickness, so that the one part 0 can be cut out to form a close joint with the part B,'and yet form an arm, D, to overlap said part B on the outer side. The joint at a, between the parts 13 and G, is made slightly beveled, as
shown, to facilitate the opening of the tail board; for, if the joint were perfectly square,
it would be liable to bind in the act of opening. ()n the outer side of the part B is a staple, b, which passes through a slot, t, in the arm D when the tail-board is closed, and a hook, (I, is passed through the outer end of said staple, thereby firmly locking the tailboard in place. The tail-board thus constructed can be easily opened and closed, as occasion requires. The hinges .10 or, which connect the parts B (J to the sides A A, are so arranged that the tailboard can be entirely detached from the wagon-box, if so de i'ed.
