SAMUEL G. MYERS, OF PANA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON END-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,612, dated March 9, 1875; application filed February 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL O. MYERS, of Pana, Christian county, Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Wagon End-Gate, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents an end elevation of my improved wagon end-gate, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1.
Similar letter of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved Wagon end-gate, which may be securely and reliably attached to the wagon-body, and be quickly taken oft and replaced, as required. The invention consists of an end-gate which is attached to the body by a lateral spring-bar with end catches that look into a recess of the side board, and a recess of an outer gate hinged to the opposite side board. 1 In the drawing, A represents the Wagonbody, and B the end-gate, to which the lateral spring-bar G is applied by a fastening screwbolt, a. One end of the spring-bar G has a projecting shoulder, 11, which is passed through a recess, 1), of one side board of the wagonbody, the gate being guided and secured, moreover, at that side by guide-cleats or strips 6. The opposite end of the bar 0 has a springcatch, f, which passes through a recess, f, of
a gate, D, hinged to the opposite side board of body A, after the gate has been placed in position at the other end, locking thereby the end-gate securely in position. The gate I) bears also, back of the spring-catch, against the end of the side board, being held by the catch and side board at one side, and the guide-strips and bar at the opposite side, in perfectly rigid and secure manner, without rattling and chance of being detached by the motion of the wagon.
The end-gate is quickly taken off by pressing the spring-catch back and swinging the side gate into open position, which allows the ready detaching of the end-gate from the opposite side board.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The wagon end-gate B, provided with lateral spring-bar with end catches b and f, in combination with the recessed side board and guide-strips c, the recessed hinged gate D, and the opposite side board, substantially as specified.
SAMUEL C. MYERS.
