Be it known that I, DANIEL W. KNnIsLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at .lohnsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Buggy-Boot Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in buggy-boot fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of buggy-boot fasteners, and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device adapted to be readily applied to a vehicle and capable of holding a bugg -boot iirmly closed to prevent the same from j olting up and down, and adapted to permit the boot to be readily opened and closed.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parte hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a buggy-boot provided with a fastener constructed in acc ordan ce withthis invention, the boot and the body of the buggy being partially broken away to show the parts of the fastener. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the depending tongue. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the attachment-plate for securin g the tongue to the buggy-boot. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the catch. Fig. G is a detail perspective view of the partial casing of the catch.

l designates a buggy-boot constructed of any suitable material and hinged at its front edge to the body 2 of a buggy in rear of the seat in the usual manner. The buggy-boot is automatically locked, when it is closed, by a fastener comprising a catch 3, mounted on the body 2, and a depending tongue 4, carried by the buggy-boot and arranged to engage the catch when the boot is closed. The depending tongue is constructed of wire or other suitable material bent to form a substantially diamond shaped loop 5, which bulges intermediate of its ends, and the terminals 6 of the wire extend laterally from the upper end of the loop at right angles to the saine and are arranged in tubular housings 7 of an attachment-plate 8. The attachmentplate 8, which is constructed of sheet metal and which is secured to the buggy-boot by a screw or other suitable fastening device or devices, is doubled to form the tubular or cylindrical housings 7, and is centrally slotted at 9 between the tubular housings. Instead of employing the attachment-plate, the terminals of the wire or other material employed to form the tongue may be secured to the boot by passing them through the same and clenching them, or any other suitable means may be employed for securing the tongue to the boot.
The catch 3, which is constructed of a single piece of resilient wire or similar material, comprises a pair of horizontally-disposed jaws l0, upwardly-extending Shanks ll, and a springcoil l2, forming an eye and receiving a fastening device 13, which secures the catch to the inner face of the rear end-board of the body and which also attaches a partial casing le to the same. The jaws 10 are angularly bent, being substantially V-shaped and forming a substantially diamond-shaped opening, and they are adapted to be spread by the oppositely-tapered or diamond-shaped tongue 4 and engage the same. The eye l2 and the lower portions of the Shanks ll are arranged contiguous to the inner face of the rear endboard of the body of the buggy, and the upper portions of the shanks are offset from the body to enable the horizontally-disposed jaws to clear the same.
The plate or casing li is provided at its inner face with a substantially V-shaped recess for the reception of the lower portion of the catch.
It will be seen that the fastener for buggyboots is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to be readily applied to the body of a buggy and the boot thereof, and that it is capable of preventing a buggy-boot from jolting up and down and rattling. It will also be apparent that it is automatic in its operation, and 'that it iscapable of readily locking and releasing the buggy-boot accordingly as it is closed or opened.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to IOO Without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages of this invention.
l. In a device of the class described, the combination with the body of a buggy, and a boot, of an oppositely-tapered tongue bulged intermediate of its ends and depending from the boot adjacent to the inner face of the rear end .of the body of the buggy, and a catch mounted on the inner face of the rear end of the body of the buggy and provided with a pair of horizontal jaws extending in the same general direction, arranged side by side and engaging the tongue above the bulged portion thereof, substantially as described.
In a device of the class described, the combination with the body of a buggy, and aboot, of an oppositely-tapered tongue bulged intermediate of its ends and depending from the boot, and a catch mounted on the body and provided with a pair of V-shaped jaws extending in the same general direction, disposed horizontally and engaging the sides of the tongue above the bulged portion thereof, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with the body of a buggy, and a boot, of an oppositely-tapered tongue bulged intermediate of its ends and depending from the boot, a catch arranged at the inner face of the rear end of the body and comprising a pair of upwardly-extending shanks, a springcoil forming an eye and connecting the lower terminals of the shanks, and a pair of horizontally-disposed V-'shaped jaws extendin g in the same general direction and arranged opposite each other, said jaws engaging the tongue above its bulged portion, and a fastening device passing through the coil, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a body provided with a boot, of an attachmentplate constructed of sheet metal doubled to form casings or housings 7, and centrally recessed between the same, a depending tongue constructed of a single piece of wire bent to form a substantially` diamond-shaped loop, the terminals of the wire extending laterally from the top of the loop and arranged in the casings or housings, 5
a catch mounted on the body and consisting of a pair of jaws, shanks connected at their upper terminals with the jaws, and a springcoil connecting the lower terminals of the Shanks, a partial housing or casing 14; receiv- 1 ing the lower portion of the Shanks, and a fasteningr device securing the partial housing to the body and passing through the springcoil of the catch, substantially as described.
