UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS BUTLER YARBRO, OF KEWANNA, INDIANA.
REIN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,558, dated November 12, 1895.
.ippiicaion mea March 12,1895.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS BUTLER YAR- BRO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewanna,in the county of Fulton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to rein-holders for carriages, wagons, and similar vehicles.
The object of the invention is to provide a rein-holder which shall consist of but few parts, which shall be simple of construction, inexpensive of production, and which will effectively hold the reins and prevent them falling around the horses feet.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved rein-holder, showing it secured to the inner side of a dashboard of a vehicle with the jaws of the holder clamped to the reins. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the holder removed from the dashboard, showing the jaws open. Fig. Sisalongitudinal vertical sectional view showing the jaws closed.
l denotes the attaching-plate, which is adapted to be secured to any convenient part of avehicle, shown in the present instance as the dashboard. Proj ecting laterally from the ends of this plate are springs 2, which mayor may not be integral with the plate, but which I prefer to make and have shown them as extensions of the plate.
3 denotes the rein-holding jaws, each of which consists of an angular plate, the outer ends of which are hinged to the free ends of the springs 2, while their intermediate portions are pivoted together by a pin 4g. The
Serial No. 541,405. (No model.)
pivoting of the jaws at their intermediate portions is preferably accomplished by bending the edges of the jaw into lips 5, through which the pivot-pin passes, although I reserve to myself the right to pivot the parts in any manner I may desire. The free ends of the jaws are bent inward to form holding-iiangcs 6, which will prevent the reins from sliding rearward from between the jaws when they are clamped to the reins.
In operation, when it is desired to attach the reins to the holder, the reins are placed between the jaws, and by pressing the jaws toward the attaching-plate they will close about the reins and the springs will hold them firmly clamped to the reins. It will also be seen that when the reins are removed and the jaws are opened the springs will retain them in this position, whereby the reins will be readily attached at any moment and no time be lost in opening the jaws. The springs therefore have a double functionnamely, of holding the jaws apart in a position to allow the reins to be engaged therewith and to hold them to the reins when they are closed about the same.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Arein-holder comprising an attaching plate, having its ends formed into springs, which project from the face of the plate at right angles, angle jaws hinged to the upper ends of the springs and provided intermediate their ends with lips and at their opposite ends with inward projecting opposing iianges, andapin passed through said lips for pivoting the jaws together, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS BUTLER YARBRO.
