TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, RUssEL B. Persons, of Norwich, in the county of Chcnango, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hold-Back Iron for Citrriage'Thills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description-oi the same, reference being bad tothe accompanying drawings, in whicht Figure 1 is a perspective view of my hold-back iron in place.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the some.
The nature of my invention consists in making the hold-back iron or stop, as shown, so that the hold-back strap will pass through and over it with a more natural fold, and thus hold much better, but also be more durable.
That others may understand my invention, I will particularly describe it.
The hold-back iron A is made with its loop higher. at one end than at the other, as clearly shown in fig. 2. This loop is set upon a plate, B, which is set in and .screwed fast, or otherwise firmly secured to the under side of the thill O, as shown in fig. 1. In attaching the hold-back strap it is passed through this loop and then around the shaft before returning to the buckle by which the end is secured. By this method, with the loop as formerly used, the strap suilered unequal strain, one edge being exposed more than the other. This was in consequence of the fact that the strain upon the strap was in a direction at a low angle to the axis of the thill. By my improvement the strap passes around the thill, and is supported in its natural position or fold by the sloping back of loop A, and the strain is thereby equalized upon both edges. The'result is the hold-back strap has a neater appearance, is more easily managed, is not so liable to jam, does better service, and will be more durable generally than heretofore.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hold-back iron or step A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
This specification subscribed to on this 25th day of June, A. D. 1866.
