IMPEOVEMENT 1N GAEEIAGE cLIPs.
'TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat I, WALTER BOUND, of Hackensack, in the county of Bergen, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage Clips; and I do hereby declare that the -following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tp. the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Y Figure 1 is a side view ofpa carriage clip, constructed according to my invention. t

This invention consists in a novel construction of a clip forpconnecting the pole or shafts of a carriage with the axl-e thereof, whereby the said pole or shafts may be attached to or removed from the carriage with great facility, -and whereby all liability of thc accidental deraugemcnt ofthe clip, and consequent casual disconnection of the pole or shafts from thc carriage, is eifectually avoided.
To enable others to understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference .to the drawings.
A represents the loop or strap by which theclip is attached to the forward axle of the carriage, the said strap being placed upon the said axle and secured thereto inthe ordinary or in any suitable manner. Formed solidly upon one side of the strap A is a flat plate, B, and formed rigidly upon one end of the said plate, and projecting forward at right angles thereto, is an en d piece, C; the plateB and rigid end piece C constituting the frame of theclip. Firrnly fixed in the end piece C, near, the outer extremity thereof, is a cylindrical pin or bolt, D, which projects inward from the aforesaid end piece in front of the plate B, and parallel with the same. E is a hinged end piece, which corresponds in size and. shape with the rigid end piece C, and is hinged to the opposite end of the plate B, as shown at a, except when turned aside -to allow the attachment or removal of the tongue or the shafts from the carriage. This hinged end piece E is situated opposite the rigid end piece C,\parallel with the saine, and has a circular socket or recess, b, formed in its inner surface near its outer extrcmity,`the
said recess b fitting over the end of the bolt D, when the clip is closed, as shown in fig. 3, and also indicated in dotted lines in figs.' 1 and 2. F is a flat spring, the rearmost end of which -is fixed to the upper edge ofthe plate B, at or near' the upper end-of the hinge a, andwhich projects forward so that it is situated longitpdinally over the uppermost surface of the hinged end piece` E, when the clip is closed, as more clearly shown in iig. 1. This spring F has a downwardly projecting lip, c, formed upon its outer edge, and near its outer or forward extremity` which projects down past the outer edge of the upper surface of the said hinged end Vpiece,'and holdsv it rmly in position against the end of the bolt D, as more clearly'indicated in fig. 3, 'while by forcing the spring E upward so that the lipve is br'ought away from the hinged cnd piece E, the said end piece may be turned back nearly in line with the plate B, as indicated by the dotted lines in fig. 2, thus uncovering the end of the Vbolt D. That part of the upper. surface of the hinged end piece E which passes under thelip c,in closing thc clip, is made bevelled or sloping onits inner edge as shown at d, in iig. 2, in order that thc said lip may be forced upward when the said end piece is swung inward, to allow the passage ofthe same, the said lip being then forced down by the spring F, past the outer edge of the end piece E, to lock thesame in a closed position, as hereinbcforc fully explained. Iron sockets or ring-headed straps are fixed to the rearmost end of the tongue or shafts in the ordinary or in any suitable manner, and the clips being secured upon the,forward axle of the carriage as hcreinbcforc mentioned, the said sockets are placed upon the bolts D thereof, the hinged end pieces being turned outward to allow the attachment of the said sockets to the said bolts D, or their removal therefrom, the sockets being retained upon the bolts D bythe hinged end pieces E, which are irmly held against the ends of the said bolts by thc lips b of the springs F, after being turned inward as just set forth', and the outer ends of the bolts being supported against the strain exerted upon them by the draught upon the tongue or shafts by being fitted into thc recesses l, when the hinged end pieces are'in a closed position as hercinbefore explained.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The'hinged end piece E, in combinationwiththo bolt D, and frame B O, substantially as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
2. The spring F, provided with the lip c, and applied relation with the hinged end piece E, bolt D, and frame B C, substantially as herein set forth for the purpose'.specified. i
