Description

KINGSTONY GOD'DARD, 0F RICHMOND, NEW YORKl Letters .Patent No. 74,817, dated February 25, 1868.
IMPROVED vTHILL-GOULINE'r.
fitte tlgemle tiefsten it in than 'ita-tm patent zmh mating gint tf itesm,
To ALL WHoM 1T MAY concisely-:f
Be it knownv that I, KINGSTONGODDARD, of Richmond, in the county of Richmond, and State of New York, have inventada new and improved Thin-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which ill enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same= reference being had to the acc'ompanyingfdratvin'gs forming part of this specification.
.This invention relates to a newand improved means for connecting the thills of vehicles to their front axles; and it has for its'object the attachment'of the Vthills in such a manner that the latter may be connected to and detached from the axle-withthe greatest facility, and when attaehedwith .the horse harnessed before the vehicle, casual detachment of thethills is rendered impossible. In the accompanying sheet-of drawings-- i Figure lvuis a side sectional vieri' of my invention, taken in the line :t w, iig. 2.
lFigure 2 is a plan or top view of the same. ,4
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l
Arepresents a portion of the front' axle of a Wheeled vehicle, and B represents a clip, which en Compasses the same, and may be constructed in the usual or in any proper manner. C represents the thill-iron, attached to th'e rearendo'f the Athill as usual, and having at its outerend a socket, D, formed by bending down the tliill-l iron, so as to leave a shoulder, @and bending the outer end of the iron upward parallel with a, as shown at b,
and then bending the upper end ot' b over inward toward the axle, as shown at c, having the end c notchedyso as to receive `a projection, d, on the clip when the thill is attached thereto. Thebent end, c, laps over the rear end of the bottom platee of the clip, as shown clearly in lig. 1, Yand holds the thill-iron up to the clip, while the notched bent end e prevents any lateral movement of the thill-ixjon; the shoulder a bearing against the front end of plate e when the horse' is backed. When the horse is harnessed to the vehicle, and the thills held up by the lugs ofthe harness, the thill-iron cannot become casually detached, but when the horse is unharnessed, and the thills let down, the thllrirons may'ibe detached from the clip with the greatest facility. l
i Having thus described my invention, claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bending or formingVA of the outer end of the ,thill-iron, substantially as shown and described, so as to be capable of being 4fitted to the under side of the clip, in the manner as and for the purpose set forth.
, y KINGSTON GODDARD.
