Winesaa N. PETERS, FHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER WAaH NGTON n c a "Q i emet fitter fittfim new ROBERT P Letters Patent-N0. 83,546, dated October 27, 1868,
IMPROVEMENT 11v "THILI -COUIBLING.
The SCheduIe'reIen-ed to in'theae Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all who're it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT PYLE, of the city of Wilmington, in the comity of New Castle, and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improved Coupling for Oarriage-Thills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had toIthe annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the coupling;
Figure 2, a side View of the die, with its screw-bolt; and
Figure 3,a section through the centre of the die;
The nature of my invention-consists in providing the ordinary clip used in thill-couplings with a die, which is so constructed that, when set in its place, between the jaws of the 'clip, and fastened by means of a screw-bolt, it presses firmly against the eye of the thill-iron, and prevents the pin, which holds the shaft or pole in place, from turning, and also keeps the v fastenings from. rattling.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe its construction and operation;
I construct the clip for holding the thill in the ordinary manner, and so lengthen the tie-iron; as to finish' with across-bed, f, for receiving the screw-bolt c, which keeps the die a in place. This. die a, which is the main feature of my invention, is made with one face to fit the curved head of the thill-iron g, and its corresponding end or face is grooved, for receiving the leather washer I), which causes thedie to bind upon the inner face of the clip k, andin its centre is a slotted opening, h, which receives the screw-bolt c, and permits its free play in settling in place.
I also set another washer in-the bed of the clip, at 0. The thill-iron 1,1 finish with a slotted end or the ordinary eye, and couple it to the clip-iron, by meansof a pin, as all such irons are fastened.
The die a, when set in its place, and made secure by means of the screw-bolt c, wedges against the clip-iron k and the head or end of the thill-iron g,-and prevents the couplmg-pin from turning in the eye of the thilliron g, or the rattling of any part of the fixture.
The shafts or pole can be readily uncoupled, by a few turns of the screw-bolt 0, the slotted eye or head of the thill-iron g permitting the immediate disconnection. 7
Where the solid eye is used, the nut upon the head of the connecting-pin must be removed, in order to draw the shafts or pole out, in disconnecting them from the clip-iron.
I do not claim the clip-iron in itself, as it is nothing new; but
-What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. The die, as constructed,in combination with the bolt and washers, as shown and described,
2. The combination of the die (I and screw-bolt c with the clip-iron k tie-iron f, and thill-iron, with an eyeor hooked end,'constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein shown and described.
