ERASTUS D. JOHNSON AND EDWARD A. OOWAN, OF THQRNTOWN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,616, dated October 3, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ERASTUS D. J OHNSON and EDWARD A. OOWAN, of Thorntown, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Thill- Oouplin gs and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing makin g a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical cross-section of our invention. Fig.2 is an under-side plan view of the same.
This invention has relation to thill-couplings and the novelty consists in forming a hook on the end of the thill-iron to grasp a flanged block swiveled to the coupling-bolt of the clip-shackle the object being to provide a steady coupling which may be readily released or engaged without disturbing the coupling-bolt.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the axle, to which is secured the shackle-clip B. O
represents the clip-arms holding the couplingbolt D. D designates a block swiveled to the bolt D, and constructed with a fiat surface, 01, and projecting lip or flange d, the latter being slightly beveled or wedge-shaped. E designates the thill-iron, on the end of which is formed a hook, e, the inside of which is shaped to coincide with the form of the lip d, which enters said hook, to form a coupling. F represents a rubber cushion, arranged between the arms (3, behind the hook e, for the purpose of keeping the latter steady. The thill-iron is disengaged by turning up the thill and then pressing the hook down from the lip d. This coupling may be employed with thills or poles.
We claim as our invention The thill or pole-iron E having the hook e, in combination with the flanged block D and clip B, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in presence of two J A. Games. (22)
