JAMES LAMB, on AURORA, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,639, dated July 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES LAMB, of Aurora, in the county of Dearborn and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Coupling, &c.; and do hereby declare that the following is a .full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompa- .nyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification. A v
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a thillcoupling, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order'to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which i y Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of my thill-coupling.
A represents a casting placed on the under side of the axle B, and secured, by means of two clips, 0'0 to the same. From the casting A extends forward a long ear, I), and a short ear, E, the former having a hole through it, near its outer end, and the latter being camshaped and convex on its inner side. G represents the thill iron provided on its side with a pin, I, to Main the hole on the long ear D, and on the rear end of said' iron is a cam-shaped concavity, H. The cam-shaped convexity on the short ear E, working into the cam-shaped concavity H on the thill-iron G,
holds the opposite surface of the thill firmly against the plane surface of the long ear D, preventing the pin I from escaping from the hole in said long car. This arrangement, by raising the thill to a perpendicular, enables the operator to remove the thill from its attachment instantly and without difficulty, thus enabling him to change from shaft to tongue or pole without the necessity of unscrewing nuts or removing bolts, saving much time and a vast amount of petty annoyance.
The same arrangement may be used for attachin g or coupling cutting-knives to mowing or reaping machines, or for any other purpose where such joint may be applicable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the short ear E with its cam-shaped convexity, and the cam-shaped concavity H on the thill-iron G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the casting A with ears D E, the latter having a cam-shaped convexity on its inner side, as described, the thilliron G with pin I and cam-shaped concavity H, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of November, 1871.
JAMES LAMB.
