UNITED, STATES cLAEK s. SANFORD,
OF LENA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,846,dated April 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK S. SANFORD, of Lena, in the county of Stephenson and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft and Pole Couplings; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a shaft and pole coupling, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in whicl:
Figure l is a plan View, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section of the entire coupling. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of that part of the coupling which is attached to the axle, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the metallic spring which makes the coupling anti-rattlin g.
A represents a plate to be laid against the under side of the axle B, with a shoulder, a, at
the rear end for the rear side of the axle to bear against. From the plate A another plate, G, runs up in front of the axle-tree B, and the whole is fastened to the same by a clip, E, which passes over the plate (3, as shown in Fig. 2. From the plates A and (J extend forward two arms, D D, connected, at or near their front ends, by a cross-bar, G, one of said arms having a hole, b, through it, while the other is formed as a hook, 0?. The plates, arms,
and cross-bar are all cast in one piece,'and form the yoke and part of the coupling which fastens to the axle-tree. H represents the thilliron, provided at its rear end with a round bar, 1, extending on both sides of the iron to form journals for the same. By raising the shaft or pole as high as it can be without interfering with the body of the vehicle, it can be inserted or removed by a horizontal movement, and, when inserted, it drops down onto the crossbar G. ()n the front end of the clip E, by the nut fastening the same, is secured a spring, J
which bears against the rodI on the thill'iron, making the coupling anti-rattling. The spring J is slotted, as shown in Fig. 4, allowing the spring to be adjusted at will.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the plate A with the shoulder a, plate (J, arms D D, with hole I) and hook d, and the crossbar G, all cast in one piece, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the plate A with shoulder a, plate 0, arms 1) D with hole I) and hook (I, and cross-bar G, all cast in one piece with the thill-iron H, bar I, slotted spring J, and clip E, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of November, 1871. l
O. S. SANFORD.
