Description
(NO MOdl.) I V LEGOMPTE.
THILL COUPLING.
No. 299,556. Patented June 3, 1884.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL DEXTER LEGOMITE, OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS.
THILL COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,556, dated June 3, 1884.
Application filed November 30, 1883.
To aZZ whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, SAMUEL DEXTER LE- UOMPTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thill-Couplings, by means whereof a more convenient and safe fastening of the shafts and poles of carriages to the axle is accomplished, and by means whereof, as well, as occasion requires, they may be detached and changed with the utmost facility. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had thereto and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clip entire, including the ordinary modes of the fastening thereof tothe axles, the ears or lugs for the attachment of the thills, the thill-irons, and the roller, all in position as attached and secured. Fig. 2 is a representation .of the thill-iron. Fig. 3 is aperspective view of the roller. I
The materials of which the parts are formed are iron or other suitable metal. The roller may be either of metal or rubber, or perhaps even of hard wood.
The end or head of the thill-iron G is flattened and expanded to correspond with the size of the cross-slots in the lugs or ears, and with the longitudinal slot of the roller, but with projections, as at H, and a correspond ing but unseen one on the opposite side, to fit into the transverse slots of the roller. The roller is of a size to fit closely into the lateral holes through the two sides of the lugs or cars. In the drawings, the letter A represents or designates the thill-iron; thesmall letters a a a, holes for the fastening of it by bolts, in the usual way, to the shafts or poles of a carriage; G, the end or head thereof, formed as above described. v
B is the clip, which is fastened upon the axle.
O G are the ears or lugs, part of the clip which receives the head of the thill-iron; D, the roller which fits into and plays in the (No model.)
. lateral holes through the two cars or lugs; I,
the cross-slots in the upper part of the ears or lugs, through which the thill-irons are admitted into the ears and roller, the shafts or pole for this purpose being held in a vertical or nearly vertical position, and the roller so placed that the horizontal slot E will be coincident with the said cross'slots I.
J is the vertical slot between the lugs or ears, through which the thill-irons and shafts or poles are brought into a more or less horizontal position in use.
E is an elongated or horizontal slot, and F F are transverse slots in the roller for the reception of the end or head of-the thill-iron.
H is a projection on the side of the head of the thill-iron, and 'a corresponding one is formed (not seen) on the opposite side to fit closely into the transverse slots F F in the roller, to hold it in place and to prevent its sliding laterally.
The anterior or front portion of the clip B, below and back of the lateral hole in which the roller D moves, is solid, and not divided by the slot which forms the ears or lugs. The slot only extends far enough on the upper and front portions to permit the entrance of the thill-irons and their play to bring the shafts or poles in position to the sides of the horse or horses, and when detached from these to permit their ends to rest upon the ground.
Since conceiving my device I have become aware that the use of ears and peculiarlyshaped ends or heads of the thill-iron adapted to them have been used, and therefore I do not claim such features as of my invention and broadly new.
What I claim as my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The'clips made with the ears or lugs, as described, the peculiar formation of the head or end of the thill-iron, the roller as shaped and slotted and as held in place by the projections of the said end or head, all constructed as described and combined,-for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
SAM. D. LECOMPTE.
