Letters Patent No. 75,698, dated .March 17, 1868.
I IMPROVEMENT IN THILL-COUPLING.
ttlg Srlgetule referat tuy im tiges: Enters atmt ant mating gaat tf the stmt.
T0 WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE PENNOYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Noiseless Devicesfor Coupling Thills or Shafts on to carriages, and a novel manner of constructing the sume. v
My improvement consists of a double solid cone, permanently attached to and forming a part of the axleclip; two solid conic caps to form a joint with the cones; ascrew-bolt for-a special purpose; and a close `or secret joint; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my improvement, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which make a part of these specica'tions.
`,Figure 1 is a. perspective view of an axle-clip with the double cone attached.
Figure 2, a. drawing of the thill-strap and the solid comic-caps A A, screw-bolt, and close joint C.
Figure 3, the several parts combined as when in use.
To enable others more fully to understand, manufacture, and use my invention, I will now describe it in detail,
To construct my improved coupling, I provide a suicient quantity of suitable iron Aor steel, from which IIk form the clip'and double cone in one solid piece, (see iig. 1.) I then form the cone-caps upon separate pieces, which are to be rights and lefts, and -one of these pieces is to be much broader, longer, and therefore stronger -than the other. This piece forms the greater and stronger section or portion ofthe thill-strap, or that portion that is necessary to be bolted to the shaft, and is to be placed upon the outer side or next to the wheel, in order to receive the greater strain when turning the carriage. This portion of the strap is narrowed-for a. few inches back from the cap, at the terminus of which narrowing 'is formed the socket or female portion of thesecret joint C. This socket is formed by boring down to a proper depth from the inner or upper side of` the strap. i The `smaller or inner section of the strap is formed with the male por-tion ofthe hinge upon theuninished endfand is A fittedv in such a ymanner as to form a capped or closed joint, the working of which is not seen from either side of the strap when the same is bolted to the shaft or thill, as shown at g. 3; the two parts of this joint being fitted and riveted together, and the two sections of the strap properly fitted to'each other, with the screw-bolt B, which passes' through the smaller or inner section of the strap, and is threaded into the outer or stronger portion of the strap, thereby avoiding the use of a nut,'the objectof this bolt being to strongly hold and fasten the cap upon the cones when in use. These caps are bored and fitted to the cones in such a manner as to be uscdwith or without packing,"aslmay be desired. Thus endsthe construction, all vof'which will be more readily Q understood by referring to the drawings.
The advantage andl operation of my invention are, that the clip and double solid cone being made of one piece of metal insures extra strength and utility; the taper of the cones'with the corresponding cap creates a constant-bearing, which prevents the usual Irattling noise; the bolt holds the cap strongly upon the cones, and facilitates the coupling and uncoupling of the shafts to the carriage; the cone-caps being solid, they exclude dust and dirt, and form boxes for oil or packing; tlie capped onclosedjoiut is strong, easy of construction, and giveseleganceof finish.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is
1. The double solid cone', in combination with the clip, fig. l.u
.2. The solid conic caps 4A A, in combination with-.the solid cones.
3. The screw-bolt, in the position and for the purposes described.v
4. The cappedjoint in constructing a. carriage-coupling, as and for the purposes described.
