vIMPIROVEMEN.lI' IN THILL-COUPLING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To-all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. .BRAYTON, of the city of Rochester, inthe State of New York, have invented a new and useful Thill-Ooupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in which the figure is a side elevation, with one of the jaws of the clip-strap broken away to show the wedge E.
The nature of this invention consists in providing a means whereby the jack of thill-couplings will be held firmly to prevent rattling, and forming the head of the jack in sucha shape that it will hold the thills in a vertical position, when desired.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its-construction and operation.
To the ordinary thin-coupling, I attach a spring, B.
In one end of this spring there are two holes to receive the ends of the clip 0, and it is held inits position' by the clip-strap A and the nuts that hold the clip on the axle;
This spring B is bent, as shown in the drawing .The lowerend extends ahead of the upper, and-has a hole to receive the end of a wedge, E, that is inserted between the rear end 'of the jack D a'nd shoulder of the clip-strap.
' The lower end of the wedge E is made so that. it will easily enter the hole in the lower end of the spring B, and has a thread on it for a hat, a, and jam-nut a. The inner end of the jack D is made cam-shaped, the cam portion being below the pivoting-bolt x.
The object of this invention is to make a device that will-prevent the jack of thin-couplings from rattling, and also sustain the thills in a vertical position while the horse is hacking into position to be attached thereto, it being more desirable to have the thills in that position rather than down at that time.
Its operation is asfollows:
The spring being attached to the clip, and the wedg inserted between the jack and the shoulder of the clipstrap, and the lower end through the hole in the spring, the nut and jam-nut are then put on, and screwed up until the spring has-a strain on it. By this arrangement the wedge is continually held down, and, by its pressure against the jack, keeps it tight.
As the jack may wear, the spring will draw down the wedge.
\ If the nut should by chance work oiiithe pivotingbolt x, the pressure caused by the spring on the wedge will prevent the bolt from getting out.
By raising up the thills until the wedge presses on the short side of the cam-shaped end of the jack D,
they will remain in a vertical position, as the spring will draw down the wedge and tighten the jack.
A spiral spring may be puton the end of the wedge vE, but I prefer the spring shown in the drawings.
