Description

@uiten giclee ,eteut @Hire Letters Patent No. 80,152, dated July 21, 1868.
IMPROYED THILL-eoPLINe.'
@its dgehrde feierten tu intim ettets 33mm aut making part uf ttc same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LYMAN DERBY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Thills to Axles of Wagons and other vehicles; and'I do hereby declare that the following is a full description of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in combining with the thill-iron and jack an elastic-strap packing for the purpose of making amanti-rattling thill-cou'pling and safety-strap. V
But to describe my invention more particularly, I will refer to the-accompanying drawings,forming a part of this specification, the same letters of reference, wherever they occur, referring to like parts.
Figure 1 is a side view of the thll-iron as attached to the jack, showing in'red outline the connection with the axle-tree of the vehicle. v y I Figure 2 is a representation of a cut section of the same parts, showing the elastic safety-strap and antirattling packing. I
Letter A represents lthe c1ip-iron for attaching to the axle B, and having on the front of it two ear-pieces of metal, C and D, commonly called the jackf Through these ear-pieces and the eye E of the thill-iron F, is inserted a bolt, G, for securing the thill and axle together.
Letter H is an elastic safety-strap, having one end attached to the clip, between the ear-pieces of the jack, by a screw-bolt, I, and the other end secured tothe lower side of the thill-iron by a'pin, J.
The object of this attachment is, first, to make a safety-strap to guard against any accidental separation of 4the thill from the axle of the vehicle should thc bolt happen to break or work loose and be lost, and second, for
packing the bolt, and thereby prevent all tendency to rattle and work loose, and thus make an anti-rattling as well as a safety thill-coupling. Y
These results will be readily perceived from the operation of the attachment. When the thills are down the safety strap is retracted, but when elevated and secured to the harnessed-up horse, the strap is drawn up or stretched! around 'the lower side of the eye of the thill-iron, and thus keeps the bolt firmly packed, as it were, to prevent all rattling of it, or tendency to jar loose the nuton its end.
Having now described my invention, I wili set forth what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States.
I claimq the combination of the elastic safety-strap H with the clip A and thill-iron F, substantially -as described and'operating as hereinbeforc set forth.
LYMAN DERBY.
