DAVID DALZELL, OF SOUTH EGREMON T, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent Nb. 61,813, dated February 5, 1867. i
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTAGHING GARBIAGE-THILLS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DAVID DALZELL, of South Egremont, in the county of Berkshire, and State of Masssh chusetts, have invented a. new and improved Mode of Attaching Thills and Draught-Poles to Axles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those Skilled in the art to niche and 1.156 the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of my invention taken in the line m a fig. 3.
Figure 2, an external view of the same.
Figure 3, a; transverse section of the same taken in the liney-y, fig. 2.
Similar lctters'of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new andiinproved thill and pole-coupling of that class in which the connection is made directly to the iron axlefimd not to the wooden bed thereof.
The invention has for its object the avoidance of wear and tear, and the consequent'rattling of the parts comprising the coupling; the exclusion of dust from theinternal parts; the impossibility of a casual. disconnection, and a perfect lubrication of the same at all times. i
A represents the arm. of an axle, and B the box thereon, which is fitted as usual in the hub of the wheel. 0 represents a collar at the inner end of the arm A, against which the inner end of the box B bears when secured on the arm by a nut, D, at the outer end of the latter. The extcriorof the inner end of the box B is turneddown to form a rebate, a, therebated end projecting over the collar C, as shown clearly in fig. 1, a washer, 6, being interposed between the collar C and a shouldcxgc, at the inner 'end of box B. At the inner end of the collar C, and adjoining it, there is a collar, E, rather larger in diameter than C, and a similar collar, E, is formed on the axle F a short distance from C,.thc space between said collars being turned to form a journal, G, on which a semi-cylindricalieye, e on the end of the thill-ironI-I, is fitted, said eye being provided with a washer, d, which is in contact with G. .I is a tube or hollow cylinder, which is fitted over the two collars E E and the eye 0*, said tube being provided with a longitudinal slot to receive the thill-iron H, and also provided with a If, in which a key, J, is fitted, said hey passing through. a hole in theithill-iron, and preventing the tube I from movjng laterally and coming in contact with the inner end of the box 13. This tube I, it will be seen, keeps the eye 0 of the thill-iron on the journal G, and its outer end fits in therebate a at the inner end of the box B. The tube, therefore, excludes dust and prevents the escape of oil or.grease from.
the journal G, a sufficient quantity of oil and grease from the arm A finding its way to G. It is designed to have the tube I fit snugly on thc collars E a, so that there will be no unnecessary play and rattling, and in case the tube I should wear a little loose, all rattling of the same may be avoided by driving in the key J a trifle further. In order to detach the thills, the wheel is removed from the arin by unscrewing the nut D, the ltey J taken Ollhyill'ld the tube I slipped off from the collars E E.
I claim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The arrangement of the semi-cylindrical eye e on the thill-iron H, and between the collars E E, journal G, tube I, axle F, and box B, when constructed as herein set forth, as and for the purpose specified.
2. I further claim the key J passing through the thill-iron H, and fitting in the 'b in the tube I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. DAVID DALZELL.
