SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 507,765, dated October 31', 1893.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER STALKER, of the Village of Union, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shaft-Coupler, for the purpose of attaching the shaft of a vehicle to the axletree or Vehicle itself; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same.
My invention relates to thill couplings,aud has particular reference to that class known as anti-rattling thill couplings.
My object is to produce an anti-rattling thill coupling which shall vbe positive in its operation, cheap and durable in its construction, and of great utility, and to that end my invention consists in the several new and novel features and combination of parts hereinafter described, and which are specifically.4
set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l, is a side view of the couplingcomplete, detached. Fig. 2, is a vertical section thereof through the center. Fig. 3, is a detached view of the bracket holding the thill iron. Fig. 4, is a detached view of the plate which holds the draw-bar or bolt within the bracket.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A, is a bracket constructed substantially as shown in Fig. 3, having means at one end for securing it to the axle in the ordinary way, and having its opposite end turned up to form a shoulder -ctwhich is provided with an opening -hand having an inwardly eX- tending arm -cwhich is provided with the central groove or notch -d-.
B, is the thill iron bifurcated at its lower end in the ordinary Way, and provided with a draw-bar or bolt -e and -fis a safety bolt or bar located directly in front of it for the purposes hereinafter set forth.
O, is a plate having an arm -gas shown in Fig. 4, with its freeend threaded and adapted to receive the nut -h-, the said plate -C being adapted to fit in closely and slide within the recess -iformed by the arm -c with the base -ctas shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
My invention is operated as follows: The thill iron is first raised to such a position as to allow the bar -eto pass within the recess -t'- the bar passing over the arm -cand the upturned end d, when the thill iron is brought down to the position shown in Figs. l and 2. The plate -C is then inserted within the recess -z'-, the arm -g passing through the opening -bwhen the bolt is secured upon arm -gas shown in Fig. 2. It Will thus be observed lthat by tightening the nut h upon the threaded arm -gthe plate -C- may be drawn tightly up against the draw-bar -e and securely held there, so as prevent its rattling. It will also be observed that when it becomes worn, it may be still further tightened to take up the play. The bar -f,- then serves as a safety bar to prevent bar -efrom being withdrawn in case through accident the plate -C- becomes detached.
What I claim isl. The herein described thill coupling comprising the bracket A, having an upturned perforated end, an arm -cforming a recess -i a bifurcated thill iron -B- having a draw'bar, and a plate -C- provided with an arm -gmeans for securing it within the opening -b-, said plate adapted to slide in the recess and engage with the draw-bar.
2. The herein described thill coupling cornprising the bracket -A- having an upturned perforated end, an arm -c forming a recess a bifurcated thill iron -B- having a draw-bar, and a plate -C- provided with an arm -gmeans for securing it within the opening -b-, said plate adapted to slide in the recess -z`- and engage with the drawbar, and a safety bar as set forth.
