SALMON E. TYLER AND RICHARD 'TATTERSHALL, OF BELOIT, 'WISCONSIN IMPROVED HARNESS-BUCKLE.
Specification forming part o f Letters Patent No. 51,367, dated December 5, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SALMON E. TYLER and RICHARD TATTERSHALL, of Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Buckle for Harness; and we do hereby declare that thefollowingis afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable any person skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters f reference marked thereon, and making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section ot' our invention. Fig. 2 is a side View ot' the lever B detached. Fig. 3 is a top perspective view ofthe buckle complete with the strap or trace. Fig. et is a similar view of the lever B detached; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the buckle-frame A A detached.

Thisinvention relates to a new and improved buckle for harness-tugs or other straps, where.- in the use of a tongue is dispensed with, and consequently the peri'orating the strap or trace.
The invention consists in the employment or use ot' a lever tted in the frame of the buckle, arranged in such a manner that the trace or other strap will be securely attached tothe tug, and the former at the same time be readily taken up or let out, as may be required.
A represents the frame of the buckle, provided With a cross-bar, on which the slotted end of thelever B hinges, the lips of the slot heilig closed on the said bar so as to work loosely. The tug-strap, which is connected with the of the frame A. The lever B is provided with a loop at its rear end to receive the breechngor bar, over which the trace or strap c c c runs, and under the said loopat the rear end or" the saidlever B. The said buckle-frame A has a a, Fig. 1. B y passing the trace or strap underJ and through the open loop in the lever B, over the rear end of the bar or loop ot' the frame A, and under the said flat cross-bar of the frame A and over the fulcrum of the lever B, by pulling on the trace it will be clearly understood that the trace must be rmly clamped. and securely held, and .thegreater the strain by direct draft the more firmly it will be held.
Thus by this arrangement we obtain a.simple, economical, and durable buckle Without the use ot' a tongue.
We are aware that tug-buckles have been previously constructed with levers and clamps; but as far as We are aware the parts have been arranged differently from purs, and in con-A sequence of being defective in adaptation, inconvenient to use, liable to let the trace slip or give way, have not been generally adopted.
Ve do not claim, broadly, the buckle trame A with the round bar on which the slotted end ofthe lever B is attached, or the liat cross-bar under which the tug c c cis clamped, separately and independently of the construction and arrangement as set forth; but
WeA do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The lever B, attached to the said roind cross-bar in the buckle-frame A, as shown at Fig. 1, clamping the tug or strap under the said i'latcross-bar in the said frameA, arranged so as to work inside the buckle-frame, extending the. whole length of the said frame and beyond the rear end thereof', provided with the bar or loop under which the tug or strap is passed, and attaching the breechingstrap to` the said loop in therear end ot said lever B,
when constructed substantially as aind for the purpose herein set forth and described.
