Description
UNITED STATES CHARLES S. OISSNA, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
IMPROVED BUCKLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,504, dated May B, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. GrssNA,
of Burlington, in the county of Des MoinesV and exact description oi' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of the buckle attachedl to the trace-strap. tudinal section ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in both gures.
This invention is designed more especially to be employed as a trace-buckle for harness, but may also be applied to any of the purposes for which buckles are ordinarily used. Its object is to produce a buckle that may be applied to the trace or other strap, which can be more easily replaced when broken than those heretofore in use.
The invention consists in the employment of an extra cross-piece formed upon the rearmost end of the frame, in rear ot that to which the tongue is pivoted, by which extra cross-piece the buckle is attached to the strap, instead of by the crosspiece which forms the pivot of the tongue, as in the ordinary manner, the said extra cross-piece consisting of a removable bolt or screw passing from one side I to the other thereof.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand the construction and operation ot' my invention, I will proceed to ,describe Ait with reference to the drawings.
\ A represents the frame ofthe buckle, which Fig. 2 is a longihas at a short distance from its rearmost end a transverse bar or cross-piece, r, to which the tongue Bis pivoted in the usual manner. The sides of the frame A extend back in rear of this crosspiece r,for1ning two ar1ns,a. At the rearmost ends of these arms a., and extending across from one end. to the other, is a bolt or screw, m, which may be surrounded by a cylindrical sleeve, a, as shown in Fig. 2. The end of the trace or other strap is folded around this bolt m, as shown `in the said figure, and inasmuch as the rear end of the tongue is not incontact with the strap its movements are not impeded by pressure or friction against the saine, and consequently it moves more freely upon its pivot, and can be more easily operated in bncklin g or unbuckling than when attached to the same cross-piece as the strap, and the removal and replacing of a broken buckle are easily effected, without ripping or cutting the sewing ot the strap, by simply unscrewing and withdrawing the bolt m and substituting a new buckle.
I do not claim a removable bolt fior attaching the strap to the buckle, when combined with a cross-bar or bail pivoted on said bolt, as in the Patent No. 49,580; but
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The removable bolt m, parallel with and in rear of the fixed cross-piece r, to which the tongue B is pivoted, all being combined and arranged substantially as shown and described.
(l. S. OISSNA.
