GARMENT HANGER SUPPORT FOR GLOTHESLINE Filed Jan. 16, 1964 INVENTQR. P5412; M. TEA/5 5 Arron/lays United States Patent 3,193,235 GARMENT HANGER SUPPORT FOR CLQTHESLINE Pearl M. Jensen, 2311 26th Ave. S., Minneapolis, Minn. Filed Jan. 16, 1964, Ser. No. 338,048 3 Claims. (Cl. 248317) The present invention has relation to an attachment for clotheslines to support hangers thereon and more particularly to an attachment which will not slide longitudinally along the clothesline when garments are hung on the hangers and the clothesline sags.
When laundrying many types of garments it is desirable to hang them upon coat or garment hangers in order to retain the shape of the garment as it dries. Usually this is done by utilizing an ordinary coat or garment hanger and merely slipping the hook of the hanger over a clothesline of conventional design.
Clotheslines always have some sag and when a hanger is hung directly on the line the clothesline will form a curve. The hanger will slide longitudinally along the clothesline to the lowest point of the line. If several hangers are hung onto a single line, all of the hangers will be bunched together at the lowest point of the line and the garments will not be properly dried.
Occasionally garments will fade when they contact other wet garments.
In order to eliminate these difficulties experienced in hanging coat or garment hangers directly onto a clothesline, the present device was advanced. The device includes a strip of non-skid-flexible material having a ring at a first end thereof and a small hanger support member at a second end thereof. The strip is looped over a clothesline and the hanger support member is passed through the ring so that the skid resistant material is in contact with the clothesline. The hanger support member depends downwardly. A coat or garment hanger can be placed in the depending hanger support member. The weight of the garment will cause the unit to clamp more tightly onto the line and the unit will not slide longitudinally even if the clothesline is very slack and the angle of incline of the line is extreme.
It is an object of the present invention to present a clothesline attachment for garment hangers which will not slide longitudinally along the clothesline when garments are hung thereon.
In the drawings,
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a clothesline showing garment hanger supports made according to the present invention mounted thereon;
FIG. 2 is a front elevational view of a garment hanger support made according to the present invention and shown in its flat position;
FIG. 3 is a side elevational view of the device of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is an end front elevational view of a garment hanger support made according to the present invention and shown supported on a clothesline; and A FIG. 5 is a sectional View taken as on line 5-5 in FIG. 4.
Referring to the'drawings and the numerals of reference thereon, a clothesline which is of conventional design is suitably mounted and, as is normal, sags to form a curve as shown. A plurality of garment hanger supice ports indicated generally at 11 are supported on the clothesline 10.
Referring to FIGS. 2, 3, 4 and 5 the construction of the hanger supports 11 is more particularly illustrated. An elongated strip 12 of flexible material which has a high friction outer surface 13 and an adhesive backed inner surface 14, is looped over a metal ring 15, Which has a diameter slightly greater than the width of strip 12 and is also looped over a second smaller hanger support member 16. The ring 15 has a straight section 17 over which the strip 12 is looped. The support member 16 will pass through ring 15. The ring 15 and the support hanger member 16 are spaced from each other. The strip is doubled over so that the adhesive backed surface 14 of the strip 12 contacts itself. The sections are pressed together so that a firm bond is made.
The hanger support member 16 has a flat attachment section 20 and a V-shaped hanger hook support member 21 at a lower end thereof. An ordinary coat or garment hanger 22 can be supported from its integral hook 23 by the V-shaped portion 21 when the clothesline attachment is supported on the clothesline.
When the clothesline garment hanger support is to be attached to a clothesline, the strip 12 is placed over the clothesline 1t) and the hanger support member 16 is placed through the metal ring 15 so that the strip surrounds the clothesline. The strip is then again passed through the ring 15, as at 24, around the first loop made with the attachment strip 12 and over the clothesline 10 as at 25 and then through the ring 15 as at 26 and is allowed to depend downwardly as shown at 27. A hanger 22 can then be placed on the support member 16 and the garment placed on the hanger. The weight of the garment will cause the strip 12 to bear against the bottom portions of ring 15 as at 30 and this in turn will cause the loop around the clothesline to tighten. The friction surface 13 will grip the clothesline to prevent the garment hanger support 11 from sliding along the clothesline.
The double loop insures that friction material is against the clothesline for a substantial portion of the diameter of the line 10. If the line is very thick, only a single loop need be formed and if the line is extremely thin, even three loops can be formed with the flexible strip 12.
It will be noted that any suitable high friction flexible material can be utilized but a resilient, non-slip surfacing material sold under the trademark Scotch Tred, a trademark of the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, has been found to be suitable.
By using this attachment hangers can be spaced at regular intervals on a clothesline as shown in FIG. 1 and the hangers will not slide together causing the garments on the hangers to touch or become compressed.
What is claimed is:
1. A clothesline attachment for supporting garment hangers comprising a strip of flexible material having a non-slip surface on a first side thereof and an adhesive surface on a second side thereof, a support ring having a straight bar section of length greater than the width of the strip, a hanger support member, said strip being looped over said straight bar section of said ring and over a portion of said hanger support member, said ring and said hanger support member being spaced apart, the adhesive surfaces of said strip being doubled back upon each other to hold said ring and said hanger support member in spaced relationship.
2. The combination as specified in claim 1 wherein I the strip of flexible material is of suflicient length so that it can be looped over a clothesline at least twice with the hanger support member being passed through said ring to form the loops.
3. A garment hanger support for a elothesline comprising a strip of flexible material, a first ring attached to said strip of flexible material at a first end thereof and having a diameter greater than the Width of the strip,
and a second support member suppor ed at a second end' of said strip, said strip being of sufficient length so'that it can be looped over a clothesline and said support member passed through said ring so that said support member depends substantially below said ring, said ring having a fiat bar section forming one side thereof to which said strip of flexible material is attached, said strip being comprised as a materialthat is flexible and is highly skid resistant on a first'surface thereof and has an adhesive material on a second surface thereof, said strip being formed by placing the strip through said ring and said support member, respectively, and pressing the adhesive surfaces of said strip against each other.
