Usually, the respective garments are supported on clothes hangers having a wirelike hook and these hooks, after a time, pinch into the fingers of a person because of the relatively small load-bearing surface they provide. In traveling, people usually carry their clothing in garment bags which have openings at the top to allow the hooks of the clothes hanger to protrude therethrough and although the bags protect the garments against dust and dirt, they do not protect against wrinkling unless the bags are carried properly. Delivery men for dry cleaning establishments have the same problem and my invention is equally suitable for domestic and commercial use.

My invention provides a simple device by which a person may comfortably carry gannents for extended periods without strain or markings of the hand, and without wrinkling of the garments. Further, the invention provides means whereby the garments may be hung on a rod, such as is found in a clothes closet or clothes stand, in side-by-side relation without wrinkling commonly caused when garments are supported in overlying or jammed-together relation.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING In the drawing accompanying this description and forming a part of this specification there is shown, for purposes of illustration, an embodiment which my invention may assume, and in this drawing:

FIG. 2 is a view illustrating the device carried by a supporting rod, and

FIGS. 3 and 4 are front and side views respectively, of the improved device.

DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT My invention comprises an elongated member formed of any suitable material, such as metal, plastic or the like. The member is preferably round in cross section although this is not critical and the member may have a square, oblong or other cross section.

The member has a handle portion 11, a garment supporting portion 12, and an intermediate portion 14, all preferably formed as an integral unit although they may be separate and suitably connected.

The member is adapted to be slung over the shoulder of a person, as shown in FIG. 1, so that the handle portion 11 is disposed in front of the person in position to be grasped by a hand of the user.

The intermediate portion 14 is curved, as seen at 15, to fit over and comfortably engage the shoulder of aperson, with the supporting portion 12 extending downwardly along the back of the person. The supporting portion 12 is provided with means to which garments may be connected so as to depend from such portion and down along the back of the person. In the presently disclosed embodiment, the portion 12 is formed as a smooth continuation of the intermediate portion, and is provided with a plurality of openings 16 spaced along the portion 12 to pass the wire hooks 17 of coat hangers 18 on which the clothing is supported within garment bags B.

The handle portion 11 may take any configuration which lends itself to comfortable grasp by the users hand and in the present embodiment the handle portion is shown as a loop 19 with an opening 20. Referring to FIG. 2, it will be seen that the loop opening 20 permits the device to be hung from a rod, such as that in a clothes closet or that of a clothing support. The loop 19 permits free swinging of the device so that the center of gravity changes with each addition of a garment, thereby automatically insuring that the supported garments will hang in orderly side-by-side manner. For example, if the clothes hanger hook of an additional garment or garment bag were inserted III the top opening l6t, the device would automatically shift to the dotted line position so that the bag or bags would be disposed in substantially vertical, side-by-side manner, and this shifting would also take place if an additional hanger, carrying a garment were added to the garment bag.

Iclaim:

1. A garment supporting device adapted to be slung over the shoulder of a person, comprising an elongated rigid member having a handle portion, a garment supporting portion and a portion intermediate the two portions, the device when properly slung disposing the handle portion in front of the person in position to be grasped by a hand of the latter, said intermediate portion being configured to fit over and comfortably engage the shoulder of said person to support the load, and the supporting portion being disposed downwardly along the back of said person, the latter portion having means to which the garments may be connected and depend therefrom and along the back of the person.

2. The construction of claim 1 wherein said handle portion provides a hook for engagement over a supporting rod, such as found in clothes closets, clothes stands and the like, so that said garments may be suspended by said device and from said rod prior and after transportation by a person.

The construction of claim 1 wherein said rigid member is curved at said intermediate and supporting portions to correspond to the curvature of a persons shoulder and back, and where in the curved supporting portion has a plurality of means therealong, each providing for support of a clothes hanger.

The construction of claim 3 wherein said handle portion provides a hook for engagement over a supporting rod, and wherein said clothes hanger support means are spaced along said supporting portion in a longitudinal direction whereby the center of gravity of the device is shifted each time a clothes hanger with garments thereon is connected to said device so that said garments depend in orderly side-by-side manner.

5. The construction according to claim 4 wherein said last named means are a series of openings spaced along said supporting portion.

6. A garment supporting device adapted to be slung over the shoulder of a person, comprising an elongated rigid member having a handle portion, a garment supporting portion and a portion intermediate the two portions, the device when properly slung disposing the handle portion in front of the person in position to be grasped by a hand of the latter, said intermediate portion being configured to fit over and comfortably engage the shoulder of said person to support the load, and the supporting portion being disposed downwardly along the back of said person, the latter portion having means to which garments may be connected and depend therefrom along the back of the person, said handle portion being in the form of a side-opening hook to fit over a supporting rod, such as found in a clothes closet or the like.
