6 Claims.
This invention relates to clothes hangers and more particularly to an adjustable clothes hanger for supporting garments of various sizes such as suit coats, overcoats and shirts.
O-ne object of the invention is to provide a clothes hanger of the above nature having extensible shoulder portions which may be adjusted to support properly garments of various sizes.
Another object is to provide a clothes hanger of the character described having means for locking it in any desired adjusted condition.
A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very efficient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 represents a front view of the improved clothes hanger showing the extensible shoulder portions in retracted position.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but showing the shoulder portions in extended position.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-sectional view, taken along the broken line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking downwardly.
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral IIJ indicates generally the improved adjustable clothes hanger embodying the invention, the same comprising a at hanger body II and a pair of flat complementary left and right hand extensible shoulder members I2, I3, respectively, slidably disposed against said hanger body. The body and shoulder members are preferably made of plastic, or they may be constructed from a strong light weight material such as plywood or aluminum.
The hanger body II comprises an upper hook I4 integrally formed with a pair of opposed outwardly and downwardly curved shoulder portions I5, I5, interconnected by a central horizontal guide portion I'I and a lower horizontal brace portion I8.
The shoulder members I2, I3 have curved outer edges I9, 20, respectively, conforming generally in shape to the shoulder portions I5, I6
of the hanger body II, .as best lseen .in Fig. .1.
In orderV that the slidable shoulder members may be adjustably lfixed against the hanger .body II, the guide portion I1 thereof is provided with an aligned pair of upper opposed horizontal slots 2I, 22, having a series of semi-circular serrated portions 2Ia, 22a, along their upper edges, respectively, and an aligned pair of lower opposed horizontal slots 23, 24, having a series of semi-circular serrated portions 23a, 24a along their lower edges respectively, the lower slots being outwardly oiT-set with respect to the upper slots. The shoulder members I2, I3 are provided with integral outstanding headed studs 25, 26, and 21, 28 respectively, in alignment with their respective upper and lower slots and slidable therein.
The slots 2I, 22, 23, 24 are provided at their outer ends respectively, with upwardly-extending circular openings 25a, 26a, 21a, 28a, slightly greaterin diameter than the heads of the headed studs 2'5, 26, 21, 28, whereby the shoulder members I2, I3 may be slidably assembled to the hanger body II.
In order that garments having thin shoulder straps may also be hung on the improved clothes hanger, the brace portion I8 at each end is provided With an upwardly and inwardly extending strap holder slot 33.
Operation Fig. 1 illustrates the improved clothes hanger showing the extensible shoulder members in retracted position for hanging garments of narrow shoulder width. In order to use the improved adjustable hanger for garments of greater shoulder width, it is merely necessary to pull out the shoulder members I2, I3 to the required width. The Weight of the garment hung upon the hanger will impart a downward force upon the outer ends of the shoulder members I2, I3, to move the studs 25, 26, 2l, 28, into locking engagement is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is
1. In an adjustable clothes hanger, the combination comprising a flat hanger body having a central upwardly extending hook portion, outwardly and downwardly opposed shoulder portions integral with the lower end of said hook, and a central guide portion integrally formed with and horizontally disposed between said opposed shoulder portions, said guide portion being provided with an upper pair of horizontal aligned slots and a lower pair of horizontal aligned slots; slidable complementary right and left at shoulder members, each having an outer edge conforming generally in shape with said outwardly and downwardly extendingr shoulder portions, and means passing through said slots to slidably retain said shoulder members against said opposite shoulder portions of said hanger body, whereby said shoulder members may be extended to accommodate clothing of different sizes.
y 2. The invention as dened in claim 1 wherein said retaining means comprises headed studs extending outwardly of said shoulder members and slidably disposed within said slots, said upper slots each being provided with a series of semicircular serrated cut-out portions along their upper edge, said lower slots each being provided with a series of semi-circular serrated cut-outs along their lower edges.
3. The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein said lower slots are outwardly offset with respect to said upper slots.
4. The invention as defined in claim 1 including an integral horizontal brace connecting the lower ends of said opposed shoulder portions.
5. The invention as dened in claim 4 wherein said brace is provided at each end with auxiliary ymeans for supporting other garments.
6. The invention as defined in claim 2 wherein each of said slots terminates at its outer end in an upwardly extending circular opening of greater diameter than the heads of said headed studs, whereby the shoulder members may readily be assembled with the hanger body.
