Description

March 4, 1969 J. NELSON 3,430,827
COLLAPSIBLE COAT HANGER Filed Dec. 9, 1966 INVENTOR dOSQPhlTle Nelson United States Patent 3,430,827 'COLLAPSIBLE COAT HANGER Josephine Nelson, 626 11th St. S., South Lethbrldge, Alberta, Canada Filed Dec. 9, 1966, Ser. No. 600,464 U.S. Cl. 223-89 Int. Cl. A41d 27/22 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment hangers, particularly garment hangers, particularly garment hangers used for travelling, since the particular construction of this device requires very little storage space and several hangers can be stored in not much more room than one regular hanger.
Broadly, the invention comprises a garment hanger formed in a plurality of sections hinged together and a supporting hook also hinged to the central portion of the hanger so that when folded the total storage space required is one fifth of the total length of the garment hanger.
In each end section the invention provides a button which protrudes on each side of the section so that a strap or bar can be secured thereto for the purpose of hanging trousers and skirts.
The primary object of the invention is therefore the provision of a collapsible garment hanger which requires a minimum of storage space.
Another important object is the provision of protruding buttons at each end and on both faces of said garment hanger for the purpose of removably securing a strap thereto for the purpose of hanging trousers and skirts.
Still another object is the provision of a garment hanger, as set forth which presents no sharp edges to hook or tear garments which are applied thereto.
Other apparent objects are the dependability, the usefulness, the unique appearance and the low manufacturing cost of the device.
With these and other objects in view that may appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of a garment hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention,
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view of one of the straps used in conjunction with the invention,
FIGURE 3 is a section along the line 3--3 of FIGURE 1, and
FIGURE 4 is a section taken on line 44 of FIG- URE 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, it will be seen the invention comprises a bar formed of a plurality of sections, in the present instance five sections are shown, but it is not the intention to restrict the invention to such, since alar-ger or smaller number of sections may be used.
Each section is hinged to each other at 5 and the hanger hook 6 is hinged at 7 to the middle section so that the device can be folded into a comparatively small bundle requiring very little storage space.
Since it is intended to manufacture the article of a smooth finish material such as some form of plastic, it becomes evident that all sharp edges will be removed to prevent damaging any garments suspended thereon.
Each end section 8 is formed with a button 9 which protrudes substantially on each side of the section and each button is formed with an enlarged head 10 on both sides of the section.
A strap 11 provided with a slit 12 at each extremity is adapted to be engaged over the button head as clearly illustrated in FIGURE 3 of the accompanying drawing so that trousers and skirts may be suspended thereon. It is intended to mount a strap on each side of the bar to hold the sections in alinement.
It is believed that the construction and advantages have been fully set forth and that further detailed description is not required.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed, it is to be understood that minor modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows.
I claim:
1. A collapsible garment hanger comprising a bar having a plurality of sections hingedly connected together to permit folding of the sections in overlapping relation, a strap on both sides of said bar, means on both sides of the end sections of said bar for removably securing the ends of said strap tothe end sections of said bar to hold said sections in alignment, and a hook hingedly connected to the upper edge of said bar intermediate its ends.
2. A collapsible garment hanger as described in claim 1 wherein said means are protruding buttons and said straps include slots formed in the ends thereof for engaging said buttons.
