(Granted under the act of March -3,
amended April 30, 1928; 3 70 0. G.
on a large scale for the suspension of the finished garments from racks. The customer receives the garments on the hanger, either wrapped or unwrapped. It is frequently the case that the garment is handled in such a way by the customer prior to his arrival home, that the garment has become rumpled or wrinkled.
Devices have been proposed for the suspension of garments inside trunks or similar containers, which are designed to preserve the shape of the garments by wrapping the said garments around one edge of the device. Such devices are customarily made of wood or similar comparatively thick and heavy material. Such devices do not adapt themselves readily to cheap mass production, and thus are not likely to be used by laundry or dry-cleaning establishments for the purpose of giving them away to their customers.
"it is thus an object of the present invention to provide a combined garment form and hanger which serves for the support of a garment from a rack, and as a shape-preserving form during transportation of the garment.
Another object of the invention is a garment form and hanger, which is mass-produced cheaply from sheet material, such as pasteboard.
Still another object of the present invention is an advertising device which may be imprinted with the name of commercial establishments and given away to customers of laundry or dry-cleaning establishments when they call for their garments.
These and other objects of my invention are carried out in accordance with my invention by a rectangular device of sheet material adapted to be suspended from a rack, and supporting a garment hanger within the outlines of the rectangle, two parallel edges of therectangle serving as a garment form.
Several embodiments of such a device are more fully described and illustrated in the following description, and in the accompanying drawings in which i Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of my device, in use as a garment form.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same device, in use as a garment hanger. I
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device illustrated inFigs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a modified form of my device.
5 is a section through Fig. 2 along lines Fig. 5 is a section through Fig. 3 along lines 8-5.
Fig. 7 is a section through Fig. i along lines 1'i.
Fig. 8 is a front elevation of another modification of my device, in which the garment-holder portion is in a plane parallel to the plane of the garment form.
Fig. 9 is :a section through Fig. 8 along lines 9-9.
Fig. 10 is another modified form of my device, wherein a garment form of sheet material is associated with a shaped garment hanger which need not be or sheet material.
Fig. 11 is a section through Fig. 10 along lines li-I I. Fig. 12 is a detail of the device illustrated in Fig. 10, showing the manner in which the garment hanger is associated with the garment form.
Fig. 13 is a front elevation of the blank from which the garment form illustrated in Fig. 10 is formed.
"More particularly, the rectangular sheet-material body serving as the garment form or core is designated H in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings. A suit of clothes A is suspended from the device in a manner presently to be described, and is wrapped around two parallel edges of rectangle II and thus protected from being wrinkled or rumpled in transport. The clothes may be protected against accidental unwrapping by means of a string or similar means (not shown).
As shown in Fig. 2, rectangular sheet H is divided into upper portion l2 and lower portion !3. Portions l2 and I3 are in yieldable hinged relationship, hinge It, M being constituted, for instance, by a line scored in the sheet material of sheet I 5. Lines 14, I4. commence at the edges of sheet II and extend inwardly parallel to parallel edges l5 and I6 ofsheet H to points IT, IT. In-
termediate the points H and I1, portion 12 constitutes a coat hanger I8 depending therefrom and consisting of shank I9 and garment support 20. Shank I9 and support 20 are outlined by cut 2| which extends inwardly from point I? to define one shoulder of shank I9, then outwardly to define one shoulder engaging edge of support 20, thence in a direction parallel to edges I and It to define the lower edge of support 26, and then conversely to define the other shoulder of support 20 and shank I9 until it arrives at point I I. Lower portion I 3 can thus be bent out of the plane of upper section I2 and garment support 26, as is shown in detail in Fig. 5. In the recess 22 formed in the lower section of portion 53 by cutting the garment hanger I8 therefrom, a pair of trousers or a skirt can be accommodated by placing the same over the bar 23 which is bounded by lower edge It and by that portion of out 2i which runs parallel to edge I6. A coat suspended from hanger 2!! and a pair of trousers suspended from bar 23 are then wrapped around edges i5 and I6 of device II in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1.
Rectangular sheet I I may be made of any suitable sheet material, such as pasteboard, galvanized sheet iron, aluminum, wood, etc. Of the enumerated materials, which exemplify but do not exhaust the list of suitable materials, pasteboard recommends itself for its cheapness and easy workability. Advertising slogans may be printed on the pasteboard, or afiixed to whatever other material is selected for the manufacture of the device.
My combined garment form and hanger can itself be suspended from a horizontal bar 24 of a clothes rack by suspension means such as the hook 25 pivoted to portion I2 on a point located above the center of gravity of sheet I I and situated on the axis of symmetry 25 thereof (see Fig. 3).
Another suspension means for my combined garment form and hanger is illustrated in Fig. 4. A slot 2'! commences laterally of the axis of symmetry 25' of rectangular sheet II at the upper edge I5 of upper portion I2 thereof. The slot, wide enough to accommodate a horizontal bar 24 of a clothes rack (see Fig. 5), extends a distance downwardly, then laterally to a point above the center of gravity of sheet II, where it is redoubled on itself and extends upwardly to a point 28 situated on axis of symmetry 26'. Thus, if the horizontal bar is inserted in slot 2?, it abuts against upper portion I2 at point 28, and device II and any clothes suspended therefrom will be accurately balanced and will swing freely.
Lower portion I3 of sheet II, as illustrated in Fig. 4, is joined to upper portion I2 by a paper or canvas strip hinge 29, 29', which extends to points 39, 39', at which latter points shank I9 and garment support 2H are formed from upper portion I2.
Whether the hinge which joins the upper portion and lower portion of my device is constituted by a line scored in the material from which the device is made, or by a paper or canvas strip hinge, or by a conventional knuckle hinge (not shown), is a matter of choice and mainly depends on the sheet material selected.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings, the hinge which connects the upper and lower portions of the device is dispensed with, and shank. I9" is bent out of the plane of sheet II" on a line 30 which runs parallel to upper edge I5" and lower edge I6 of the device. Garment support 20" extends from shank IS in a plane parallel to the plane of sheet II. Trousers or a skirt may be draped over bar 23" which is integral with lower portion I3". Suspension means, such as hook 25", are shown pivoted to upper portion or bar I2 of sheet II". It will be understood that the slot suspension means illustrated in Fig. 4 may be substituted to equal advantage for those illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9.
In a further modified form illustrated in Figs. 10 to 13, sheet III is divided into an upper portion H2 and lower portion M3 by a hinged line scored therein at line I14, which runs parallel to upper edge H5 and lower edge IIG of the device. Upper portion I I2 is further scored at lines H1 and H8 running parallel to scored line IM. Upper portion H2 is folded along lines H4, H1 and H8, and a clothes hanger H9, consisting of suspension hook I20, shank I 2I and garment support I22, is inserted in the fold. The hook I20 oi hanger II 8 abuts against edge H5 of device II I, and is retained against lateral displacement by releasable means such as clips I23. I23 which retain the upper portion H2 in folded position. The pressure of clips I23, I23 holds clothes hanger H9 flat against the lower portion H3 of sheet I I I; however, the resiliency of the material of sheet III and of clothes hanger H9 permits the latter to be deflected from the plane of the former sufiiciently to permit the suspension of garments A therefrom. These garments may be wrapped around sheet III over its parallel edges, for protection against wrinkling and rumpling.
When it is desired to blunt the parallel edges of the rectangular garment form, additional lines parallel and close to such edges may be scored in the material of the sheet, and the edges bent along such lines. For instance, in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 10 to 13, lines I24 and I25 are scored in lower portion II3 of sheet III near and parallel to lower edge H6 thereof, and the sheet is bent along those lines to present a blunt contact surface to clothes A along the line of their turn around sheet III.
Sheet III may itself be suspended by pivoted hook I26.
I have illustrated in the foregoing description of my appended drawings several embodiments of my invention by way of example. It is clear, however, that other embodiments within the spirit of my invention can be designed without departing from the plan of my invention, by changing proportions or forms of individual parts or similar obvious alterations. Such changes are within the scope of my invention, which is defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A combined garment form and hanger. comprising a rectangle of sheet material folded upon itself along a plurality of lines scored in said rectangle parallel to one of its edges, and a shaped garment hanger comprising a garment supporting portion and a hook, said hook being retained in said folded portion of said rectangle.
' 2. A combined garment form and hanger. comprising a rectangle of sheet material folded upon itself along a plurality of lines scored in said rectangle parallel to one of its edges, means for retaining said rectangular sheet in folded position, and a shaped garment hanger comprising a garment-supporting portion and a hook, said hook being retained in said folded portion of said rectangle.
3. A combined garment form and hanger, comprising a rectangle of sheet material folded 5 upon itself along a plurality of lines scored in said rectangle parallel to one of its edges, releasable means for retaining said rectangular sheet in folded position, and a shaped garment hanger comprising a garment-supporting portion and a hook, said hook being retained in said folded portion of said rectangle.
