JANG GARMENT HANGER July 2, 1963 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Filed May 9, 1960 Attorneys ilit This invention relates generally to garment hangers, and more particularly to such devices of the type used in retail clothing outlets, cleaning establishments, in the home, and the like.
When garments are wrapped for carrying on the street, they are customarily placed on metal hangers within a bag, or folded and placed in a bag or box. Means for this purpose are relatively inexpensive, and consequently very little change has occurred in the manner of wrapping the garments over the years. It is well known, however, that hangers and wrapping devices of this type have a number of serious shortcomings.
When metal hangers are used, for example, the garments tend to slide on the support rod and bunch at one end or fall off, causing the garment to become wrinkled. Also the hanger is not easily carried, and the garments tend to trail on the ground unless the hanger is held in an uncomfortable elevated position. Similar difficulties are encountered with bags or boxes; the garments wrinkle easily, and the boxes are clumsy and hard to carry.
The present invention is directed to what now seems a simple solution to the above problems, and has as a general object the provision of a simple inexpensive garment hanger which is easy to carry and which minimizes the tendency of the garment to wrinkle or fall ofi the hanger.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device a of this kind which is simple in construction, and which is simply and inexpensively mainufactured.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which may be used with virtually any type of garment.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of this kind, of carboard or other expendable material, which may be quickly employed by sales personnel or customers having no prior experience with the device.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description of exemplary embodiments, and from the drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a device of the invention, in partially assembled position, showing one procedure for positioning a garment on the device;
FIGURE 2 illustrates the device of FIGURE 1 in fully assembled position, but shows a modified procedure for positioning a garment on the device;
FIGURE 3 is a view in transverse section along the lines 3-3 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURES 4 to 6 are plan views of the device of FIG- URE 1 showing respectively an unfolded position, a partially folded position, and a fully folded and assembled position of the device.
FIGURES 7 and 8 are detail views illustrating modified forms of rod engaging support means useful with the devices of the invention;
FIGURE 9 is a like View of a further modification, showing foldable portions adapted to provide a reinforced support means;
FIGURES 10 to 13 are detail views illustrating both assembled and disassembled position of modified interlock means, useful with the devices of the invention;
FIGURES 14 and 15 are views like FIGURES 4 and 6 showing a modified device of the invention, particularly useful for hanging mens or Womens suits; and
FIGURE 16 is a view on a reduced scale illustrating a bag or outer Wrapping adapted to be used with the devices of the invention.
Generally stated, my invention comprises a pair of elongated panels joined together at their middle so that one is foldable into a position extending through a lateral recess provided in the bottom edge of the other. Engageable means are also provided on the free ends of the panels so as to provide a cooperating interlock. As will appear, this construction makes possible a wrinkle free positioning of a garment on one of the folding panels, followed by interlocking of the device to firmly hold the garment in carrying position. Preferably the device is additionally provided with a hanger type support means adapted to support on a conventional horizontal hanging rod.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated in FIG- URES l to 6 comprises a first panel or body portion 19 foldably attached to a second panel or a garment supporting portion 12, about the fold line 14. Intermediatev the ends of the panel It? is an inverted U-shaped recess 16 which preferably is in substantial alignment with a rod engaging support member 18. In this case the sup port 18 is constructed as a protrusion on the panel and has an aperture 21? of a size somewhat larger than the conventional hanging rod.
As best illustrated in FIGURE 4, the panel 12 com prises upper and lower panel portions 22 and 24 foldable about the fold line 26. In a folded position of the panels, the fold line 26 constitutes a garment supporting edge surface (note FIGURES 1 and 5). It will be noted that the fold line 26 is spaced from the lower edge 28 of the device a distance somewhat less than the recess 16. This relationship permits the folded panel 12 to be further folded about the vertical fold line 14 so as to extend in garment supporting relation through the recess 16 of the panel 14 for example, as illustrated in FIG- URES l, 3 and 6. Preferably the free ends of the panels 10 and 12 are additionally provided with interlock means, such as the slot 30 and tongue 32, which cooperate with one another in holding the panels 10 and 12 in closed garment supporting relationship.
In a use of the device as illustrated in FIGURE 1, a skirt, a pair of pants, or other garment, is folded and positioned in supporting relation on the upper edge surface 26 of the panel 12. The panel 18 is then manipulated to position the panel 12 and the garment 40 within the recess 16, in the manner particularly illustrated in FIGURES 1 and 2. During this operation care is taken to see that the garment is not bunched on the support panel 12 and is free of wrinkles. Upon inserting the tongue 32 into the cooperating slot 36*, the panels become rigidly interlocked to hold the garment in desired muss-resistant relation. The device can now be positioned endwise on a conventional hanging rod, for example as used by clothiers and cleaning establishments, or further packaged for carrying by a customer as in FIGURE 16.
FIGURES 2, 3 and 5 illustrate the manner in which my device can be adapted to the hanging of relatively long garments such as dresses, formals, nightgowns, etc. As illustrated, the panel portion 22 includes a pair of extending arm portions 44, parallel to the panel and adapted to be received within the neck opening of a garment, (FIGURES 2 and 5). FIGURE 3 illustrates the manner in which the remainder of the dress may be looped over the support edge 26 of panel 12, in the manner previously described.
FIGURES 7 and 8 illustrate modifications of my device, to facilitate its use in the home. Thus, in FIGURE 7, the support member 18 is provided with a tear line 46 adapting the device to be hung on an end supported hanging rod. FIGURE 8 shows a conventional hook construction 18a which may also be employed.
FIGURE 9 illustrates a construction fabricated from the separate foldable pmels 50, 52 and 54 which may be assembled to provide a reinforced hanger, 'as follows: Member 50 is folded on top of member 52 about the fold line 56, tab 58 is then folded upward adjacent the member 50, following which member 54 is folded about the line 60 to a position overlaying the member 50 and the hook or finger 62 engaged in interlocking fashion with the slot 69 of such member.
FiGURES to 13 illustrate possible variations in the interlock means 30, 32. Thus FIGURE 11 illustrates wedge type hook member 32a adapted to be received in the open slots 30a, as in FIGURE 10. FIGURES 12 and 13 illustrate books 3217 adapted to be received Within closed slots 30b.
FIGURES 14.and 15 illustrate modifications of my device useful, for example, to support a mans suit. In this embodiment the panel 10 is constructed with sloping upper edge suri ace 70, providing a suitable support for the coat of the suit. The pants hanging portion, or panel 12, is provided with a pair of fold lines 26 which function to provide additional rigidity to this member in folded position. These and other variations and applications of the device are considered to be well within the scope of my invention, as disclosed herein.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the present invention makes possible a simple inexpensive garment hanger which can be readily fabricated from cardboard or other expendable material in a simple stamping operation. Folding and assembly of the device is thereafter readily accomplished without any need for external fasteners or skill in manipulation. A particular advantage of my device is that it permits assorted articles of clothing such as skirts, pants, dresses, sweaters, etc. to be positioned in wrinkle free fashion on the support panel 12, which can then be interlocked with the panel 10 to maintain the garment in such position. My
device also possesses the advantage that the garments are supported for effiortless carrying at arms length, without attendant danger that the garment will come into contact with the ground and thereby become soiled or mussed.
