PACKING HOLDER FOR COATS 'AND b'rnsa GARIENTS Filed Nov. 24 1924 Patented May 31, 1932 UNITED STATES ALFRED 'r. no1 xINs, or nnrnonfiurcmom IE AOKING HOLDER FOR COATS ANDOEIfiER GARMENTS Application filed Iovember24, 1824.; Serial No. 751,953.
The invention relates to a garment packing device designed to facilitate the folding of garmentsinto a small compact bundle suitable for packing in trunks or suitcases without unduly wrinkling or destroying the press of the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a device having means for supporting the igure 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device shown in Figure 1 aftera suit has'been placed thereon;
Figure 4 is a perspective view-of the device showing a modified construction;
Figure 5 1s a transverse section thereof;
Figure 6 is a plan view of the device illustrating the method of packing the garment.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Fi ures 1 to 3 the packing holder comprises a rame A having spaced rounded bars B and C respectively connected at their outer edges by the cross members D and D. E is a sup orting member adapted to be insertedin t e upper portion of the garment and is preferably formed with slop'in rounded edges F for engaging the shoulders of a coat This member is secured to the frame intermediate the bars B and C and preferably has a hinged connection with one of the bars. 5 As shown the connection comprises the sheet metal strap-G secured to the member by the units G and having the rounded portion Gr passing around the upper rod B between the proj'ectin pins H.
'- .5 A modlfiedstructure is shown in Figures 4 more a substantially to 6 wherein the frame I is made of carilboard or other suitable material and has a continuous back J extending across the frame while the front is provided with a recess K slightly larger than the supporting member L so as to provide a clearanceM for the shoulders of the garment. The upper edge portion N of the frame is rounded and of a substantial thickness and the lower edge N is similarly constructed, there being a sloping portion 0 connecting the latter with the surace 0' forming the bottom of the recess. The up er boundaries of the recess P and l are pre erably sloped to correspond substan tially to the curved surfaces Q of the supporting member and the latter is preferably formed of relatively thin material compared with the frame so that when the garment is placed thereu on the top surface L will be ush with the top surface 1% of the frame. i
In packing a garment such as a coat S on either of the above described holders, it is preferably first placed on a flat surface such as a table or bed with the lapels S on the upper side and the supporting member is in- 'serted in the shoulders portion of the garment as illustrated in Figure 6. The sleeves T are thenarranged smoothly on the lower ortion of the coat after which the garment 1s folded over-the lower edge N, while maintaining sufiicient tension to prevent wrinkling of t-he cloth. In this manner the coat may be wound tightly around the parallel edge portions and when once wrapped will remain in that position occupying a minimum of s ace.
If desired, other garments may be wrapped around the first garmentand, for example, in the packing of mens suits, the vest and the trousers are each wrapped around the bundle on top of the coat as illustrated in Figure 3. A strap U may then be placed around the com leted bundle, thus securely holding the clot es in place. This arrangement results in a ackage of a convenient size which may readi y be placed in the ordinary size suitcase or travelling bag.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A-device for compactly foldling garments for packing purposes comprising a. fashioned member for engaging the shoulders of a garment, a substantially rectangular frame surrounding said fashioned member and secured thereto, said fashioned member being movable into the plane of said frame, said frame having parallel rounded marginal portions on opposite sides of said fashioned member and spaced apart by a distance less than the transverse dimension of said frame, whereby a garment having the shoulder portions supported on said fashioned member may be Wrapped around said spaced marginal portions to form a compact bundle, the largest dimension of which is in the direction of the Width of the garment.
2. Adevice for compactly folding garments for packing purposes comprising a frame having parallel rounded edge portions spaced apart by a distance less than the transverse dimension'of the frame, said frame having a recess intermediate said edge portions, and a fashioned shoulder-engaging member hingedly secured to one of said edge portions and arranged in said recess between said members.
3. A device for compactly folding garments for packing purposes comprising a frame of substantial thickness having parallel rounded edge portions spaced apart by a distance less than the transverse dimenslon of the frame, amember fashioned for engagement with the shoulders of a garment 'hingedly supported on said frame to swing about an axis parallel to said edge portions, said frame havinga recess therein for receiving said fashioned member and provided with clearance for the shoulder portion'of the garment.
In testimony whereof I afiix m signature.
