DISAPPEARING HANGER HOOK xiled July 24, 1945 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Tipp g i rfa ATI'D R N EYB Patented Aug. 12, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My present invention, in its reference to improvements hangers of the type which may a suitcase, or the like, and jections (as for instance the usual top hook) to get in the way and catch on to things, and more particularly, it is my purpose to provide a coat hanger wherein improved lmeans are provided for neckties, and wherein the ends of the hanger fold against the tbody to form a symmetrical and compact article of pleasing appearance and smooth exterior, furthermore, the usual top hook in my hanger seats itself on a recess in the hanger and is out of the way when not in use; the hinges and ttings are glue set to be smooth and to eliminate as far as possible the use of screws and the like, and I provide eyes for use of auxiliary articles and the holders which present a smooth surface and have improved knobbed ends to facilitate placing the ties on the hangers. My device is sturdy, practical, has no fragile parts likely to get out of order, and is an ideal article for travel purposes and compact packing.
Other and equally important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the lfollowing description and drawings, and it is pointed out that changes in form, size, shape, materials, and construction and arrangement of parts, is permissible and within the purview of my broad inventive concept and the scope of the appended claims,
In the drawings, wherein I have illustrated a preferred :form of my invention` Figure 1 is a side view of my hanger opened up for use;
Figure 2 is a top plan view;
Figure 3 is a side view of my hanger folded into a compact parcel;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of my hanger folded 11D;
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a section of the body of the hanger showing the top hook concealed;
Figure 8 is a transverse section on the line 8 8 of Figure 7 Figure 9 is a longitudinal section on the line 9-9 of Figure 7;
Figure 10 is a lbottom view showing the necktie holders, and
Figure 11 is a detail section showing the slot and glue means for attaching the necktie holders.
In the drawings wherein like characters of broad aspect, has in foldable coat be easily placed in will have no proreference are used to designate like or similar parts throughout the several views:
The numeral I designates the body of my coat hanger and 2 and 3 the side wings which, when folded out as in Figure 1, form a coat hanger with a top edge 4 downwardly curved from the center in opposite directions to conform to the contour of the shoulders of a coat. Formed at the center point of the body is a hook-shaped cavity -5 which has a cylindrical vertical part 1 restricted at the top to form a shoulder 8 and the curved depression `9 hasl iinger indentations ICI so that a person may grasp a. hanger hook I I concealed with its hook-shaped part I 2 on the curved depression or cavity A9 and with its shank 9a slidable in the vertical cylindrical part 7. A circular turn I3 at the bottom of the shank near the .point I 4 prevents pulling the hook from its cavity 5. 'Ihe circular part and point are seated in the iitting I5 at the bottom of the cavity 5. On the bottom edge of t-he body part I are a plurality of necktie hangers I6 which have laterally extending curved shanks I1 spaced from the edge to receive the ties, and the end of each tie hanger is formed with a knob I8 to facilitate placing the ties on the hanger.
The side wings 2 and 3 fold in opposite directions against the body I and hinges I9 are placed on opposite edges of the body and seated in cavities where they are glued in place by a suitable form of glue for that purpose. These are spring hinges, as shown at 20 to normally hold the wings closed against the body. In use, the wings 2 and 3 are simply folded out and the hanger hook withdrawn from the cavity 5 whereupon the device is ready to receive neckties and be used as a coat hanger. The necktie hangers have extensions 2I which t and are glued as at 22 into slots in the bottom of the body of the hanger. Eyes 23 are used to attach articles and hold the articles together.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the operation and advantages of my invention will be apparent, but it is again pointed out that interpretation of the scope of my invention should only be conclusive when made in the light of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
'1. A coat hanger comprising a body having a straight bottom edge, and a curved top edge, a pair of lateral wings on the body having a straight bottom edge in line with the bottom edge of said body and curved top edges forming a, continuation 0f the top edge of the body to end in narrow curved ends which lie within the 3 ends of the body and said wings extend from the end edges` of the body to fold against opposite sides of the body to form a compact parcel, spring hinges for the lateral Wings urging the same normally against the body, the body having a hook shaped cavity at thercentral point of its top edge, a hanger hook contained in the cavity to be concealed thereby, and designed to extend out of the cavity when it is to be used, the cavity for the hanger hook having an enlarged vertical cylindrical part forming a shoulder, and the shank of the hanger hook has a circular turn adjacent its ends to engage the shoulder and prevent its Withdrawal from the body. Y
t 2. The invention as dened in claim 1 wherein the body and foldable wings are symmetrically curved to eliminate sharp points and edges to form a compact parcel with no sharp projections,
and wherein the body is formed with anger depression to grasp the coat hanger, and Wherein a tting is provided to receive and circular turn of the hanger shank.
