- TOURIST CABINET sTooL Filed Aug. 12, 194e 2 sheets-sheet 2 W mfg@ lPatented June 5, 1951` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOURIST CABINET STOOL Rose H. Nelson, Sacramento, Calif.
Application August 12, 1946, Serial No. 689,969 1 claim. (c1. 31e- 235) The present invention relates to a convertible baggage carrier of a type adapted for use by tourists, and more particularly pertains to a cabinet which may serve as a means for encasing wearing apparel and the like, and which may also be opened to serve as a dresser. A more detailed object of the invention is to provide a slidable member in association with the cabinet, which may be withdrawn to an extended position and serve as a. seat.
A still further object of the invention is to provide novel grasping means for manually withdrawing the slidable member from the cabinet assembly.
Other objects and features of the invention will be apparent upon consideration of the accompanying drawings and the following description wherein an exemplary embodiment of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a perspective View of the cabinet embodying the invention illustrating all of the parts in a closed position.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of theA cabinet on the section line 2--2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view showing the seat in an extended and erected position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View illustrating the manner in which the cabinet may serve as a dresser.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional View taken through the upper compartment on the line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the folded seat assembly.
The invention relates to a tourist cabinet and seat combination which serves as a trunk within which various items of wearing apparel and the like may be stored during transit. The cabinet structural arrangement includes a slidable member which may be withdrawn from a position within the cabinet to serve as a seat. The top cover of the cabinet is hinged and provided with a mirror on the inner face whereby the device may serve as a dresser.
The cabinet is substantially rectangular in shape and may be formed of any suitable material such as metal, plastic or wood. The top portion of the cabinet is adapted to provide a relatively large compartment I9 within which hats, caps and the like may be stored. Immediately below the compartment i!) a cosmetic drawer II is provided which is adapted to be mounted in a conventional manner so as to slide outwardly and expose a plurality of comfil) partments therein. This drawer carries a plurality of partitions (not shown) within which cosmetics, handkerchiefs, stockings, medicines and the like, may be arranged. 'Ihe drawer Il is provided with recessed hand grips, las illustrated, whereby the drawer may be withdrawn from a closed position. The drawer lI is adapted to slide in suitably shaped grooves in the side walls as illustrated in Fig. 5. The compartment I0 is separated from the drawer II by a bottom member 4.
A plate-shaped slide member I2 is mounted below the drawer II and is adapted forsliding movement in the side walls of the cabinet as illustrated in Fig. 5. The slide member I2 is adapted to serve as a seat in the extended position, and for this purpose a plurality of legs 20 are provided. The legs .2are connected at their upper ends by reinforcing bar I9, as shown in Fig. 4, and the leg assembly is hinged to the underside of the member l2 by means of a plurality of hinges, one of which is shown at 9. The hinge structure is such that when the legs are unfolded from the horizontal position, the upper ends of the legs 2|] and the reinforcing bar I9 will prevent further outward swinging of the legs and thereby provide an adequate support for the member I2, when it is used as a seat. The legs 2B may be folded to lie under the member I2 and the entire seat structure may then be pushed into the cabinet. It is for this purpose that the grooves in the side walls of the cabinet are large enough to accommodate both the plate member I2 and legs 20. The inner end of the seat portion I2 is provided with a cross bar 2l as shown in Fig. 6. This bar has a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of the legs 20. The bar 2| accordingly supports the inner end of the plate I2 when it is in extended position. The bar 2| is attached to the under side of the seat I2 and is spaced at 2Ia from the ends of the legs 20 when they are in folded position.
A further drawer I3 is provided below the seat member I2. The drawer I3 is adapted for occommodating lingerie, slips, and the like. The drawer I3 is mounted for sliding movement in suitably arranged grooves in the side walls of the cabinet. This drawer may be provided with a slot 8, whereby the drawer may be grasped and conveniently withdrawn from the closed position. This slot 3 also permits the finger tips to be introduced therethrough and engage a recessed hand grip 3 in the reinforcing bar I9. This recess 3 will be arranged under the seat I2 when the seat assembly is in a folded and closed position.
Another drawer I4 is mounted below the drawer I3, and this drawer is designed to accommodate shirts, underwear, pajamas, sweaters, and the like. The drawer I4 is provided with hand grips as illustrated in Figsl and 4, whereby the drawer I4 may be manipulated to an open position.
The `compar'tr'nent I0 is closed by a hinged cover I5 which is adapted to swing to a substantially vertical position as shown in Fig. fl. The hinged cover I5 may be provided Awith Aa collapsible hand grip 6, as shown in Fig. 1. The cover I 5 may be secured in closed position in any suitable manner. Y The hinged cover T5 carries a mirror I6 on the inner face thereof, of such dimensions as to substantially cover the inner face of the lid I5. The mirro'r lIS may be securedto the lid I5 by means of screws or 4,the like. The mirror I6 is of such dimensions as to lie within the compartment YI0 when the lid 1541s closed, whereby the mirror is vprotected during transit. The mirror is so arranged that when the hinged member is in open position, Vthewmirrror will serve as a reflecting surface for the-head and shoulder portions vof a person seated on the member I2.
s The `upper compartment I is provided with ya plurality of bags I1, which may be 'formed oi any suitable flexible material attached to the side walls of the cabinet. The bags I'I are adapted to lreceive `hair netsyhead wrappings, gloves, and the like, or any articles of clothing which may be readily folded without the disadvantages of irregular creasing. 'lfhe rear wall of the compartment I0 is provided with a plurality of resilient straps I8 which may be attached to the rear wall in any suitable manner. The straps iI8 may be formed of rubber tape or the like. The straps I8 will then serve to retain various items required during travelling, valong the rear wall of the chamber I9. s
While the invention has been Vshown and described with reference to speciiic structural de- 4 tails, it will be appreciated that various changes may be made in the cabinet structure. Various modications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim:
A cabinet assembly comprising, two spaced side walls, a rear wall joining said side walls, a front wall joining said side walls, said side walls 'each having a 'groove therein, a plate 4member slidable in the grooves of said side walls and wthdrawable from a position within the cabinet, a pair of legs, a reinforcing bar connecting end portions o'f'vsaid legs, hinges pivotally connecting the legs to an underside of said plate member whereby' th legs and the bar may be hinged to lie along the under face of the plate member, said grooves in the sidewalls having a vertical di'ensioi slightly greater than combined thickness of said plate member and one of said legs so that said grooves -slidably accommodate said legs, said reinforcing ba-r having a vvslot in the outer face thereof, 'a drawer mounted "for sliding movement on ythe side walls below said plate member, a front closure-forming panel of Vsaid drawer having a 4Tslot extending into its upper 'edge in alignment'with theslot inrsaid reinforcing bar.
