FURNITURE Filed April 17, 1933 M7? INVENTOR.
Patented Sept. 26, 1933 i Application April 17, 1933'. Serial No. 666,481
9 Claims. (01. 45-106) This invention relatesto furniture and is par- .ticularly directed to a combination wardrobe and folding screen.
An object of this invention is to provide an 5 article of furniture of the character described having awardrobe or closet portion and provided with panels foldable against opposite "sides of the wardrobe, said article being so constructed as to function as a folding screen.
A further object of this invention is=to provide in an article of furniture ofthe character described, a wardrobe open on one side,-and'a panel foldable to close the open side of the wardrobe and movable to'a position where one edge of the panel is contiguous to one of the rear edges of said wardrobe.
A further object of this invention is to provide a compact, neat and rugged article of furniture of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, comprise few and simple parts, which shall be easy to manipulate for folding and unfolding, and which shall nevertheless be practical and eificient'to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out;
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. lis a perspective view of an article of furniture embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device shown in Fig. 1 with one of the panels swung open and showingin dot dash lines the screen panels in position for use as a screen;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal,cross-sectional view out through the device' shown in Fig. l of the drawing; I i
Fig. 41s a'view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the screenpanel's in unfolded position;
Fig. 5 is a perspective, fragmentary detail view of oneof the double hinges;
Fig. 6 is aview similar to'Fig. 5 but showing the hinge in another position; i
Fig; '7 is a partial, horizontal, cross-sectional viewof an article of furniture embodying the invention, illustrating a modified construction thereof;
be opened and used as'a screen, and theper'son Fig. 8 is a view similarto-Fig. 7 but showing the parts in another position; and y Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a portion of the structure shown in Fig. '7. 1 Referring now in detail to the I ignates a pieceof furniture embodying! the invention, here shown in the form of 'acombination wardrobe and folding screen. .Thedevice 10 comprises a wardrobe, cabinet orucloset 11. of any drawing-10 des- '60 suitable construction, and'provided with a bottom wall 12, a top wall 13, side walls14-and 15, and a rear wall 16. Thecabinet 11 may beopen at the front and may be provided with a. shelf 17 or with partitions, drawers, or any other interior construction, l
Hinged to one of the rear edges 20 or the'wardrobe .11 by a pair ofdouble' hinges 21 isascreen panel 22 foldable against the outer surface of the rear wall 16. The panel 22- is also swingable 7 about the hinges 21 to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the. drawing. It will be'noted that thehinges 21 which are of well known construction,
permit the panel22 to be swung 'to opposite sides of the plane of the rear wall 16. Attachedto the side wall 15 of the wardrobe 11, remote from the corner '20 of said wardrobe, are a pair :of' spaced, parallel, horizontal guide bars .23.' Each bar 23 is provided withv a portion parallel to and somewhat spaced from the outer surface of said side wall 15 and with end portions fastenedzto 5 the front and rear edges of; said side wall, in any suitable manner. I,
Slidably mounted on each of said bars 23 is a slider 25 to which there is attached a double to above. Mounted on the hinges 21ais a panel 27, similar to the panel 22. The'slider's 25, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing, are slidably moved toward the front edge 28 of the "side wall 15. In such position the vpanel'2'7 may 'be swung into position for covering the front open end of the wardrobe. .When' it isdesired to use the device 10 as a screen, however, the panel 22 may be swung to the position shown in Fig.2 Sin dot dash lines, and the panel-2'7. maybe swung open and the; 'sliders25 -fmoved rearwardly to carry the panel 27 to the position shown in Fig.
4. The panel 27 may then be swungabout the ing. In such position, the device may be used as j a screen- Thus a person may keep clothing ,in the wardrobe which may be closed compactly, as shown in'Fig. 1 of the drawing; The device may hinge 21a, similar to the double hinge21' referred standing in front of the Wardrobe may remove clothing from the wardrobe while being screened.
In Figs. '7, 8 and 9 there is shown a combination wardrobe and screen 10a embodying the invention and illustrating a modified construction thereof. The device 10a. comprises a wardrobe 11a having a rear wall 16a and side walls 15a, and preferably being open at the front.
Hingedto one of the rear corners of the wardrobe in a manner similar to that shown in Figs. 1 to 4, is a panel 2211 similar to the panel 22 and foldable-against the rear wall 16a of the Wardrobe. Attached to the sidewall 15a, however,.
are a pair of spaced, vertically aligned, upper and lower hinges 35. To one leaf of each of said hinges there is soldered, riveted or otherwise attached, a plate or bar 36. The hinges are preferably located substantially on the mid-section of the side wall 15a, and each bar 36 isof a length substantially equal to half the width of said side wall 15a. Attached to the outer end 3'7 of each plate 36 is a double hinge 211) similar to the hinges 21a and 21. Attached to thev hinges 21b is a screen panel 38 swingable into position for covering the front side of the wardrobe 11a. 1
As shown in Fig. 70f the drawing, the plates 36 are swung to extend from the hinge 35 toward the front edge 28a of the side wall 15a, and the panel 38 is swung into position for closing the front side of the wardrobe. As shown in Fig. 8 of the drawing, the plates 36 are swung to extend from the hinges 35 toward the rear edge 30a of the side wall 15a, and the panel 38 is swung about the hinges 211) into position for use as a screen.
. For retaining the plates 36 in either the position shown in Fig. '7 or Fig. 8, said plates are each provided with a horizontal slot 40. Attached to the inner surface of the side Wall 1512 and disposed on opposite sides of each hinge 35, are a pair of spaced, aligned plates 44 and 45, each provided with a screw threaded opening. Screwed to said screw threaded openings and extending through suitable openings in said side wall 15a are screws 46 and 4'7 having winged heads 48 and 49, respectively. The screws 46 and 4'7 may be turned to bring the heads 48 and 49 into position for extending through the slot 40. Thus when moving the panel 38 from the position shown in Fig. 7 to the position shown in Fig. 8, the heads v.48 of the screws 46 are first turned to horizontal position to permit the plates 36 to be swung through .180" to the position shown in Fig. 8. The heads 49 willpass through the slots 40 as the plates are swung, to the position shown in Fig. 8. Said heads 49 may. then be turned into vertical positiorifor engaging the plates to retain the same Pill against movement. It will be understood that there are provided two screws 46 and 4'7 foreach plate 36'.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitingsense.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim asv new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
