1 Claim.
Thisinvention relates to new and useful improvements in a combination bookcase, bed and radio.
The invention has for an object the construction of a bookcase which is adapted to house and hold a foldable bed in a manner so that the bed may be extended and used when desired.
Still further it is proposed to arrange the bookcase so that when in the closed position just the books are exposed and the bed hidden from view.
Another one of the objects of this invention is the provision of a camouflage element adapted to hide the bed from view when the doors of the bookcase are opened.
Still further the invention also proposes an arrangement whereby said camouflage element may be easily removed.
Still further the invention also proposes arranging the bookcase in such a manner that a radio may be mounted therein for the entertainment of a person when going to sleep, or at any other time. v
As another object of this invention it is proposed to arrange the folding bed in such a manner so that it may be conveniently extended and folded back into its position within the case.
Another one of the objects of this invention is the connection of the bed with the bookcase in such a manner, and the arrangement of the folded bed, so that the folded bed takes up a small com.- pass within the bookcase.
Still further the invention proposes the construction of a device as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost. i
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a combination bookcase, bed and radio according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of Fig. 1 but showing the doors open and camouflaged bed covering element removed.
Fig. 3 is another perspective view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating the bed extended.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view as though taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3 but illustrating the bed in a partially closed position.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but illustrating the bed in its fully closed position.
Fig. 6 is a front elevational view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating the device with the camouflage element in position.
The combination bookcase, bed and radio according to this invention comprises a bookcase 10 open at the front and provided with doors 11 for closing the opened front. This bookcase has several shelves 13 at the top for holding a set of books 14. The doors 11 are provided with glass or other transparent windows 15 so that the books may be seen even though the doors are closed.
The bookcase 10 is provided with a lower compartment 16 for holding a folding bed as hereinafter further described. The upper portion of the bookcase is provided with a partition 1'! which divides off the compartment 18 adapted to hold a radio set 19. Preferably this radio set should be provided with a time control switch so that it may be turned on when a person retires to bed and after a predetermined period of time automatically shuts itself ofl. The time switch also may be arranged that in the morning the set automatically tm'ns itself on. The combined bookcase and folding bed may also be built without the radio set. r
A camouflage element 20 is provided for closing the front of the compartment 16 when the bed is folded within the compartment 16 for the purpose of hiding the bed when the doors ll of the bookcase are opened for access to the books. This camouflage element 20 has its front face, see Fig. 6, arranged to simulate a plurality of drawers. This camouflage element 20 is in the form of a -fiat board having a bevelled lower end 21 adapted to engage in a groove formed in the floor of the compartment 16 for the purpose of firmly holding the lower portion of the element 20 in position upon thebookcase. A strip 22 is attached upon the rear of the element 20 near the upper edge thereof and is adapted to frictionally engage against the lower face of the partition 13 for the purpose of holding the upper portion of the element 20 in position. While a specific arrange-- 45 ment is shown for detachably mounting the element 20 upon the books to close the compartment 16 it should be borne in mind that other arrange-. ments may be used such as a lock or catch. when m nt. The folding bed comprisesa foot section mattress. A conventional wire support elementcompartment 16 and being hingedly connected at the front end with an intermediate section 24 which in turn is hingedly connected at its front end with a head section 25. A trunnion 26 is arranged near the rear end of the foot section 23 and interengages with the inner face of the sidewalls of the compartment 16 for the purpose of adapting the foot section to be pivoted into and extended from the compartment 16. A pair of legs 27 are pivotally mounted at their upper ends near the front end of the foot section. Rods 28 are pivotally attached upon the legs 27, at one of their ends, and at the other ends pivotally are attached upon the side walls of the compartment 16. These rods 28 serve to brace the legs 27 when the bed is in the extended position and furthermore serve to automatically fold the legs 27 against the sides of the foot section 23 when the bed is folded into the'compartme'n't 16.
Legs 30 for supporting the head section are hingedly mounted at the corners thereof.
Braces 31 rigidly connect as a unit the legs at the front end of the head section 25 and other similar braces connect as a unit the legs at the rear of the section. Hinged elbows 32 are connected between the legs and the head section 25 for the purpose of holding the legs 30 in operative extended positions as clearly shown in Fig. 3, or to be bent to move the legs 30 into a collapsed position against the under side of the .head section. The latter condition of the legs 30 are clearly illustrated in Fig. '4.
The foot section 23 is provided with a customary foot member 33 and the head section 25 with a customary head member 34. A hook element 35 is attached upon the head section 25 and is adapted to cooperate with the foot element 33, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4,- for the purpose of holding. the bed in a partially collapsed position. A transverse rod 36 may be attached upon the side of the intermediate section 24 and serves as a handle for manipulating the bed in itsfolded or partially folded position.
,In Fig. 3 the folding bed is shown fully extended. In Fig. 4 it is shown partially collapsed. The dot and dash lines 37 schematically indicate a mattress upon the bed, to illustrate the manner in which the mattress is folded when the bed is folded for the purpose of storing the 38 is extended across the bed for the purpose of pporting the mattress in a customary manner.
'This wire mattress support 38 may bend to allow the folding of the bed.
The bed may be folded from its extended position as shown in Fig. 3 by lifting up the head section 25 so as to place it directly above the foot section 23 with theintermediate section 24 extended up at right angles between the head and foot sections. In. this position the head element 34 will be located to the rear of the foot element 33asclearly illustrated in Fig.
4. This allows the book element 35 from the head element 25 to be intereng sed with a portion of the-foot member 33 to hold the'bed in its folded condition;
Fromthepositionofthebedillustratedinl'ig. 4 it may be folded into the position illustrated inns-fibvliffl stbebed pmdsbr handle 36 so that the sections thereof arepivoted around the trunnion 26 into the compartment 16. Automatically as the sections of the bed pivot, the rods 28 will pivot the legs 27 against the sides of the foot section 23. The legs 27 should be short enough so as to be capable of assuming positions immediately above the trunnion 26 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 since in the folded position the legs are in the same vertical plane as the foot section 23 and in the same line with the trunnion 26. A portion 28 of the rods 28 is bent laterally so as to extend around the trunnion 26 since the rods 28 will assume positions across the axis of the trunnion. Next the camouflage element 20 should be placed across the open front of the compartment 18. The device will then be in the position illustrated in Fig. 6.
It is also to be understood that the folding bed may be placed in other furniture according to this invention such as a buffet, wardrobe, etc.
- While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in'the appended claim. a
Having thus .described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:- a
A combination bed and shelf case, comprising a cabinet having top, bottom, and side walls and an open front, a horizontalpartition extending across said'cabinet and constituting a shelf for books or the like, trunnions mounted upon the side walls of said cabinet slightly inward of their front edges and well above the bottom of said cabinet, a folding bed disposable, when collapsed, within the cabinet compartment beneath'said shelf, said bed having a foot section and a head section, folding legs for said head section, said foot section being pivotally supported, adJacent its extremity, by and upon said trunnions and being adapted to be swung, with said head section when folded thereupon, into said compartment,,supplemental and colsaid, means including normally spaced bracing means parallel to said foot section and collapsible into proximity therewith, said last mentioned means having crook portions extending forwardly of and clearing, said trunnions when said bed is collapsed, a camouflage panel disposable across the front of said bed compartment and means for securing said panel in rigid, flat relation across said bed compartment, said means comprising a channel portion disposed on said cabinet bottom adjacent its forward edge re ceptive of the lower edge of said panel in hingelike fashion, a member extending across said panel adjacent its upper edge and adapted to snugly underlie, be eng g d by and partially support said' cabinet shelf when loaded, and means, for abutting the intermediate portion of said panel and precluding inward flexu're there- JACOB
