BAR CHAIR Filed Dec. 19, 1962 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 INVENTQR. MARIA TIHOVICI 3,136,57 8 BAR CHAIR Maria Tihovici, 49 Ave. D, New York, N.Y., assignor of thirty-five percent to William Behan, Staten Island, N.Y. Filed Dec. 19, 1962, Ser. No. 245,694 2 Claims. (Cl. 297-194) This invention relates to chairs and more particularly to new and useful improvements in a combined armchair and bar.
An important object of the present inventionis to provide a chair of the upholstered or overstuffed type, whose arm rests are hollow, serving as storage space for swinging drawers adapted to hold bottles, glasses and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an upholstered or overstuffed type armchair with swinging drawers in the arms so constructed and arranged that the occupant may at will readily cause the drawers 'to be swung open from concealed position into position of use and as readily swung into concealed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined chair and bar of this character wherein means is provided for limiting the swinging opening movement of the drawers.
Still another object is to provide a combined chair and bar of this type that is simple and rugged in construction, pleasing in appearance and that can be manufactured and sold at reasonable costs.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a combined chair and bar embodying the invention, in closed position.
FIG. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in open operative position, with a bottle shown in one drawer and glasses shown in the other drawer.
FIG. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 33 of FIG. 2. 1
FIG. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 44 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of FIG. 1 showing the drawer structure held in swung adjusted position in dot-dash lines.
Referring in detail to the drawings, in FIG. 1 a combined chair and bar is illustrated and designated generally by the reference numeral 10. The chair is of the lounge type having a square flat wooden seat portion 12 supported on wooden legs 14 at the corners thereof. Arm rest structures 16 and 18 are supported on the seat portion 12 at the sides thereof, and behind the seat is a straight upstanding wooden back portion 28. The seat portion, arm rest structures and back portion are covered with upholstery material 24 and drapes 26 of the same material hang down from the seat portion concealing the legs 14. The drapes are stitched to the bottom edge of the upholstery material forming a hem 28.
The back portion 20 comprises a pair of spaced wooden panels 30 with a spacing wooden strip 32 closing the top and with wooden strips 34 closing the spaces at the side ends of the panels. The space at the bottom of the spaced panels is closed by the rear end of the seat portion 12.
In accordance with the present invention, each arm rest structure 16 and 18 is constituted by a box-like hollow casing 36, rectangular in configuration and having a top wall 40, an outer end wall 44, an inner side wall 46 3,136,578 Patented June 9, 1964 and being open at the outer side as indicated at 48. A rectangular-shaped drawerstructure 52 occupies eachcasing 36. Each drawer structure comprises a body having a bottom 54, side walls 56 and end walls 58 and being open at the top. One end of the drawer structure is hingedly connected to the casing 36 by means of a block 60 secured to the casing at the inner surface of the outer end of the outer end wall 44 and a hinge device 62 having one leaf 64 fastened to the block and its other leaf 66 fastened to the adjacent end wall of the drawer structure. A false bottom 68 is provided in eachdrawer structure, which false bottom is formed with a series of spaced holes 70. The open side of each casing 36 is closed by a panel 71 of upholstery material. A tape 72 is secured along the outer top edge of the panel and supports teeth 74. A similar tape 76 with teeth 78 is secured to the underside of the top wall 40 of the casing along the outer edge thereof. A separable fastener element 80 is adapted to slide along the teeth on the tapes for closing and opening the casing 36. 7
Means is also provided for limiting the outward swinging movement of the drawer structure. For this purpose, an elongated round threaded rod 82 extends through a hole 84 in the upholstery 24 of each arm rest structure,
through an aligned hole 86 in the inner side wall 46 of the casing 36 and through an aligned passage 88 in the block 60 and through and outwardly of a threaded hole in the leaf 64 of the hinge 62 disposed in the path of outward movement of the drawer structure at a point outwardly of the connection of the hinge leaf 66 to the end wall 58 of the drawer structure. A handle 92 is formed on the other end of the rod for manipulating the same. A metal knob 94 is fastened to the outer side wall 56 of the body of the drawer structure at the free end thereof to facilitate swinging the drawer structure.
An upholstered cushion or pad 96 is losely laid over the seat portion 12 between the arm rest structures 16 and 18 for comfort and protection.
In use, the combined chair and bar 10 is normally used solely as a chair as shown in FIG. 1. If it is desired to convert the chair to a bar, it is merely necessary to open the separable fastener at the side of each arm rest structure 16 and 18 whereupon access is had to the drawer structure 52 in the respective casing 36. As shown in FIG. 2, one of the drawer structures, for example, the drawer structure in arm rest structure 18, may support drinking glasses 100 in the holes 70 in the false bottom 68 of the drawer structure, and the drawer structure in arm rest 16, for example, may support a bottle 192 fiatwise on the false bottom 68 therein. The drawer structure may be readily swung inwardly and outwardly on hinges 62 by means of the knobs 94. Outward swinging movement of the door structure is limited by the protruding end of the rod 82 which may be adjusted toward and away from the drawer structure by merely turning the handle 92 as will be understood. Of course, any other articles such as smoking articles and the like might be supported in the drawer structures.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1. A combined chair and bar comprising a body including a seat portion, legs supporting the seat portion, a back portion, hollow arm rest structures at the sides of the seat portion, the outer sides of the structures being in the hollow arm rest structures, the tops of the drawer structures being open, said mounting including a hinge having one leaf attached to the outer end of the respective arm rest structure and its other leaf attached to the adjacent end of the respective drawer structure, said drawer structures having false bottoms, said false bottoms each having a series of spaced holes therealong, the open sides of the arm rest structures being covered with removable upholstery, a separable fastener for opening and closing the upholstery covering of each open side of the arm rest structures, and adjustable rod means for limiting the outward swinging movements of the drawer structures.
2. A combined chair and bar comprising a body including a seat portion, legs supporting the seat portion, a back portion, hollow arm rest structures at the sides of the seat portion, the outer sides of the structures being open, drawer structures swingably and movably mounted in the hollow arm rest structures, the tops of the drawer structures being open, said mounting including a hinge having one leaf attached to the outer end of the respective arm rest structure and its other leaf attached to the adjacent end of the, respective drawer structure, said drawer structures having false bottoms, said false bottoms each having a series of spaced holes therealong, the open sides of the arm rest structures being covered with removable upholstery, a separable fastener for opening and closing the upholstery covering of each open side of the arm rest structures, and means for limiting the outward swinging movements of the drawer structures including for each drawer structure an elongated round rod extending transversely through the outer end of its respective arm rest structure, said rod having a knob at one end outwardly of the arm rest structure, the other 'end of the rod being screw-threaded and passing through a threaded hole in one of the leaves of the hinge and outwardly of said one leaf, said outwardly protruding end being disposed in the path of movement of the adjacent end of the drawer structure.
