The present invention relates to end tables and is particularly concerned with end tables for use with davenports, arm chairs and similar pieces of furniture comprising a seat portion and one or more arms or arm rests.

An object of the present invention isto provide an end table particularly adapted for use with the above-mentioned type of furniture in small rooms where space is a factor which must be taken into consideration.

Another object of the invention is to provide an article of the class described which is designed to'lend a modernistic touch to old davenports and the like.

Additional objects and features of the present invention willbecome apparent from the following description thereof and'with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a davenport having at the ends thereof a pair of end tables of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken along line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an elevational view partly in sectional taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a side'view of a modification of the present invention; and Fig. dis a cross sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Fig. 4.

The-end table Of the present invention broadly comprises a structure including a top and spaced side and end walls secured to and supporting the top portion and cooperating therewith to form a box-like structure adapted'to fit over and enclose the arm of a davenport, arm chair of similar piece off-urniture. A portion of one sidewall and if necessary a portion of the top of the end table is cut away to provide an opening for receiving the horizontalor seat portions and the back portion of the piece of furniture with which the table is to. be used. .7

Referring now to Fig. 1, numeral Ill indicates a davenport comprising a horizontal seat portion .I I, a back l2 and a pair of arms or arm rests l3 secured to opposite ends of the horizontal portion II. The illustrated davenport also includes a plurality of removable seat cushions l4 resting on the horizontal seat portion H. The end tables of the present invention are designed to be placed over the arms l3 of the davenport and wholly to enclose the same. i

In themodification shown in Figs. 1 to 3 each of the end tables comprises a horizontal top 2|, spaced

side walls

22 and 23, a front wall 24, and a rear wall 25, the various walls being secured to thetop and to each other along their adjoining sides to form a generally box-like structure having an open bottom. The lower and rearmost sections of one of the side walls 23 are cut away along line 26 so that when the end table is placed over the arm of the davenport, the opening in Wall 23 will receive the horizontal seat portion H and-back portion l2 of the davenport with the lower edgeof the wall 23 extending along a line above the top of the seat portion ll below the surface of seat cushions M. The rearmost edge of wall 23 may be shaped to conform to the curvature of the back l2 Of the davenport. A section of the top 2| will ordinarily also be cut away adjacent the rearmost portion thereof as at I9 to receive the end of the davenport back I2 so that the end table can be placed over the arm i3 with the side wall 23 extending downwardly along the inner side of the arm adjacent the seat portion ll. When thus positioned over the arm of the davenport, the table gives the impression of being an integral part of the davenport" and also provides a relatively large and useful table top surface without utilizing an excessive amount of floor space.

The modification illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 is particularly adapted for use with davenports or the like having relatively low arm rests. In this modification part of one of the side Walls 31 and 0f the top 32 is cut away in the same manner as side wall 23 and top 2| in the modification illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, the edge defining the cut away portion having substantially the same contour as the seat portion H and back l2 of the davenport. The top 32 is primarily supported by means of front wall 33 and back wall 34.. The modification illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 primarily differs from the one previously described in that a vertical partition 35 and a horizontal. partition 36 at the upper end of the vertical partition divides the interior of the table structure into three compartments, two of which can be used for storage. One compartment defined in part by wall 3! and partition 35 is adapted'to receive the arm 13 of the davenport while a second compartment of similar shape provides cabinet space for' storage of magazines, liquor, or other articles. Access to this section which is defined by partition 35 and the outer side wall 38 is attained through doors 39 hingedly mounted tothe front and back portions of the table andforming'part of the outer side of the table structure. Above the cabinet section there is a generally horizontal section in which a drawer 40 can be slidably mounted, this drawer receiving section extending over the top of the arm [3 of the davenport when the table is placed in position at the end of the davenport in with 5 arm l3 enclosed by the first compartment.

It will be obvious that the end tables of the present invention may be made of any suitable material and may be provided with any desired surface finishings. In the modification illustrated in Fig. 1 the table is shown as covered with leather or leatherette secured to the table structure by means of upholstery tacks 15 along the outer edges of the front wall 24. The tables are particularly useful in the furnishing of rooms too small to accommodate the usual end table or tables in addition to the other necessary furnishings. They also can be employed to advantage for improving the general appearance of davenports, chairs, etc., the arms of which have become soiled or worn.

While the invention has been described with specific reference to structures for use with existing davenports, chairs, etc., it is alsowithin the scope of the invention that the end table units be built into new furniture as part ofor in place of the arms or arm rests thereof.

Having described the invention in what are considered to be certain preferred embodiments thereof, it is desired that it be understood that the specific details shown and described herein are merely illustrative and that this invention may be carried out by other means.

What I claim is:

l. A removable end table adapted for use with a piece of furniture comprising a seat portion with a cushion thereon and an arm, said end table comprising a hollow box-like structure in cluding a top, front, back, and a pair of side walls and adapted to be placed over the arm of said furniture, the lowermost edges of at least said front and back walls being adapted for resting upon the floor for supporting said table, the lower portion of one of said side walls being cut away to fit over the seat portion of said piece of furniture below the upper surface of said cushion.

2. A removable end table for use with a piece of furniture including a seat portion with a cushion thereon, an arm and a back, said end table comprising a top, front, back, and a pair of side walls joined to said top, the lowermost edges of at least said front and back walls being adapted for resting upon the floor for supporting said table, a portion of one of said side walls being cut away to fit conformably against the seat portion below the upper surface of said cushion and against said back of said piece of furniture when said article is placed over the arm thereof.

A removable end table adapted to be placed over and to enclose the arm portion of a piece of furniture comprising a seat having a cushion thereon, an arm and a back, said end table including a top portion, vertical front and back walls and a side wall joined at its upper edge to said top and depending therefrom a sufiicient distance so that the lower endthereof will extend downwardly along the inner side of the arm when said table is positioned thereover below the upper surface of said cushion, said back wall being adapted to extend behind the back of said piece of furniture for preventing accidental displacement of said end table in the forward direction.

A removable end table adapted to be placed over and to enclose the arm portion of a piece of furniture comprising a seat portion having a cushion thereon, an arm and a back, said end table comprising a top, a front and back wall joined to said top and side walls joined to said front Wall and to said top wall, the, lower and rear portions of one of said side walls terminating along a line conforming to the seat below said cushion and back of the furniture piece adjacent the arm, said back wall being adapted to extend behind the back of said piece of furniture for preventing accidental displacement of said end table in the forward direction.

5. An end table as in claim 4 wherein a portion of the top thereof is cut away to receive" the end section of the back portion of the piece of furniture.

6. An end table as in claim 2 wherein the top of the table is notched to receive the end of the backof said piece of furniture, and said back wall extending behind the back of said piece of furniture.

7. An end table adapted to fit over and enclose the arm of a davenport, said table including a top, spaced front and rear walls and a side wall joined to the top and front wall, said rear wall adapted for extending behind the back of said davenport, the lower and rear portions of said side wall and a portion of the top adjacent the rear wall being cut away to fit conformably against the seat and back sections of a davenport when said table is placed over the arm thereof with said side wall extending downwardly along the inner side of said arm below the seat cushions.

8. An end table of the class described for use with a piece of furniture comprising a seat portion, and arm and a back, said end table comprising a top, front, rear and a pair of spaced side walls, one of said side walls being cut away along the lower and rear portions thereof to, fit conformably against the arm and back of said piece of furniture when said table is placed over said arm, a vertically extending portion between and spaced from said side walls and dividing said table into an arm receiving compartment and a second compartment, and doors in the other of said side walls for access to said second compartment;

An end table of the class described for use with a piece of furniture comprising, a seat portion, an arm, and a back rest, said end table being adapted to'be placed over and enclose said arm and comprising a box-like structure, including a top, spaced side walls, a front wall, a rear wall and an open bottom, a vertical partition between and spaced from said side walls dividing said table into an arm receiving compartment and a storage. compartment, and a drawer slidably mounted in the upper portion of said table, said drawer extending over said arm when said table is positioned with said arm enclosed in said arm receiving compartment.
