CHRISTINA VANDEN WYNGAARD, OF GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED SOFA AND CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 607,905, dated July 26, 1898.
' Application filed November 1,1897. Serial No. 657,036. (No moan.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTINA VANDEN WYNGAARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and usefullmprovements in a Combined Sofa and Cabinet, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvementsin combination sofas and concealed cabinets.
The object of my invention is to provide a form of sofa suitable for a parlor or drawingroom within which various receptacles are concealed, which may be easily reached and are adapted to contain supplies for needlework and devices for facilitating such work.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of my invention as it appears when used as a sofa. Fig. 2 is a section view drawn on line :20 0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view with the various receptacles in open position. Fig. etis a front view with he extreme front removed, on line y y of Like parts are identified'by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.
A rectangular frame A is provided with legs B and end drawers C, the latter having ornamental knobs D to facilitate removing them, and similar knobs are located on the front of the frame to correspond with the drawerknobs at the ends. The arms of the sofa are formed with box-shaped compartments E,having recessed lids F hinged thereto, the compartments and lids being suitably upholstered to present a neat and attractive appearance.
I have shown the upholstery G of the compartments projecting above and away from the latter, and the upholstery G of the lid is formed to fit into the enlarged space, so as to wholly conceal the joint.
"Within the lid-recesses F, I have provided swinging rods H, adapted to hold spools and similar articles, and the compartments may be subdivided by partitions I, which are preferably. formed of cloth or similar yielding material.
The back of my sofa is formed in two sections-=a lower rigid sect-ion J and an upper chambered section K, hinged to the lower secmovably held at the other end by a pin M,
which registers in a socket in the lower section. A folding platform N is also hinged to the lower section at O and is adaptedwhen folded to fit snugly into a recess P in the under surface of the upper section, thus cooperating with the hinge and holding-pin to secure the section K rigidly in its position. When it is desired to use the platform N, the upper section is lifted to clear the platform and to withdraw the pin M from its socket, the section being then swungbackwardly to permit the platform to be unfolded and swung upon its hinge-pin O to the desired position. The section K is also provided with a compartment Q, covered by a lid R and upholstered in a manner similar to the arms, as above described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure bylLetters Patent, is-- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a sofa comprisinga suitable frame, having compartments in the ends and back'covered by lids,
and provided with upholstery arranged to con ceal the joints, the back being also provided with a movable section and a folding platform interposed between the movable and permanent sections of the back, whereby the platform may be either concealed between the sections, or extended in position for use, when the movable section is swung away from the permanent section, substantially for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a sofa comprising a frame having suitable legs and provided with drawers sliding in from the ends, arms having compartments thereincovered by recessed lids, a sectional back having a compartment formed in the upper sec tion thereof, and provided with a lid, a fold ing platform interposed between the sections, and adapted to fit into a recess inthe upper section, and a hinge-pin securing said platform to the lower section, together with suitable upholstery concealing the various joints, substantially for the purpose set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a sofa comprising a frame having suitable legs, arms having compartments therein covered by re c'essed lids, swinging spool-holding pins 10- suitable upholstery concealing the various cated in said recessed lids, a sectional back joints, substantially for the purpose set forth. [0 having a compartment formed in the upper In testimony whereof I affix my signature section thereof and provided with a lid, a in the presence of two witnesses. 1
