UNiTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. ALGER, OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED COUCH ND CHEST.
SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,712, dated February 3, 1903.
Application iiled August 2l, 1902. Serial No. 120,538. (No model.)
To all whom t rata/y concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. ALGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Couch and Chest; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a combined couch and chest or cabinet; and its object is to produce an article of this description which is very neat and attractive in appearance, simple in construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production.
A further object is to provide means for facilitating the packing of wearing-apparel, dry goods, dac., within the chest which forms the body portion or base of the couch and for keeping the same smooth and clean and permitting of their easy and quick removal.
With the above and other objects in View, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, said invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved couch and chest. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the same looking in the direction of the box which contains the flexible partitions.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the body of my improved couch and chest, which is preferably in the form of a rectangular box of any desired construction, style, and finish. The top of said body portion, which forms the chest, is closed by the two covers 2 and 3, hinged at 4 to the ends of the body and adapted to fold or swing inwardly and downwardly, the cover 3 being formed with a projecting iiange 4', which is adapted to overlap and rest upon a similar flange` 5, formed upon the cover 2, when the covers are closed in order to present a neat joint at their meeting ends. The upper rail or stile of the body is rabbeted, as shown at 6, to coact with the rabbeted portion 7 of the stile or rim on the covers 2 and 3 in order to aord a tight dust-proof joint between the covers and body. The tops or upper surfaces of the covers are preferably cushioned or upholstered, as shown at 8, and rolls or pillows 9, which form arm or head rests, may be located at each end of the couch.
Upon the inside of the couch or chest, at one end thereof, is a box 10,which, if desired, may be made removable or may be built into the end, adapted to contain a series of adjustable flexible partitions ll. The said partitions are preferably of cloth and are rolled upon the rollers 12, which may be spring-actuated, if desired, in order to allow the partitions to be quickly and easily rolled up. The partitions are adapted to 4pass through slots or openings 13 in the-front wall of the box 10 and to be stretched lengthwise of the body to form separate compartments,in which wearing-apparel,house furnishings, and goods of any description may be packed or stored away, and thus be kept smooth and clean, and at the same time permitting of their easy and quick removal. Any number of these partitions may be provided in the box 10 and as many as desired may be employed in packing the chest.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages of my improved combined couch and chest will be readily apparent Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a chest or similar receptacle, of a box located at one end thereof, rollers mounted within said box, and flexible partitions upon said rollers adaptedto separate or divide said chest into. compartments when unrolled or extended, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a chest or similar receptacle, of a removable box located at one IOO end of said chest and provided with slots or In testimony whereof I have hereunto set openings in one wall, a row or series of rollmy hand in presence of two subscribing Witro ers mounted in said box, flexible partitions nesses.
rolled upon said rollers and adapted to ex- 5 tend through said slots in the box and to be GEORGE A' ALGER stretched lengthwise of said chest to sepa- Witnesses: rate the same into compartments, substan- C. R. NEVITT,
tially as set forth. GEO. W. JOHNSON.
