FOLDING UMBRELLA BACK.
(Application filed Mar. 13, 1902.)

WITNESSES:
46a ATTORNEY UNrrnn STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
ADOLPll \V. WAGERHANS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. I
FOLDlNG UMBRELLA=RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,790, dated October 7, 1902. Application filed March 13, 1902. Serial No. 98,072. (No model) To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH \V. MAGER- HANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrella-Racks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in holders or racks for umbrellas, canes, and other articles, and has for its object more particularly to provide a light, durable, and efficient apparatus for the purposes above named, which may be readily folded and packed for transportation or for storing away when not in use.
A further object of said invention is to provide a rack which may be used singly or in numbers arranged side by side in groups when it is desired to provide accommodations for a large number of umbrellas, canes, r te.
These objects above set forth I am enabled to attain by means of my invention,w11ich consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and then pointed'out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a folding umbrella-rack made in accordance with and embodying my invention. Fig. 2 .is a top or plan view showing the rack folded up and the pan removed. Fig. 3 is a side view of the rack, and Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively enlarged detail plan and sectional views showing the means for securing the leg members to top and base frames.
In said drawings, A designates the rack, comprising the folding leg members 13 B made of iron or other suitable material and pivoted together near their middle by bolts a.
C denotes a rectangular base-frame made of similar material and secured at its corners to the inner sides of the leg members B B intermediate their lower ends and thepivots a, by means of bolts b and nuts 0, said bolts having a portion of their heads cut away, as
shown at Figs. 4c and 5, and contacting with the inner ends of the base-frames O to prevent said bolts l) rotating.
.Vithin the upper ends of the leg members B 13 is disposed a rectangular top D, consistapart'and parallel to each other and the sides and ends of the frame D and have their ends secured within the ends and sides of said frame D, thus forming numerous separate openings or spaces for the reception of umbrellas, (be.
Within the rectangular base-frame O is supported a shallow receptacle or pan G, having a false bottom H therein, composed of longitudinal rods I and transverse rods J, having their ends bent downward, whereby to support said false bottom 11 within the pan G above its bottom and its rectangular openings in register with those in the top frame D.
lVhere a rack of large capacity is required it simply becomes necessary to place a number of the individual racks together side by side, and in this way an apparently continuous rack of any capacity may be readily obtained. 7
To fold the rack for storing or transportation, it is only necessary. to remove the pan G and then remove the bolts 1) and nuts 0 at one end of the top D and the bolts Z) and nuts cat the opposite end of the base-frame O and fold the rack to the position shown at Figs. 2 and 3.
Without limiting myself to the details of construction, which may be varied within the scope of the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A folding rack for umbrellas and other articles comprising a pair of pivoted leg members, a frame secured at its corners to the upper ends of said leg members having longitudinal and transverse rods secured. therein separated equally from each other and the in- :0 port said false bottom within said receptacle above the bottom of said receptacle, substantially as specified. V
Signed at the city of New York,in the county and State of New York, this 11th day of March, 1902.
A. W. MAGERHANS.
