' A TOPAZZI CABINET Filed Dec. 14 1922 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Feb. 24, 1925.
UNITED. STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
ANTONIO TOPAZZI, or S'IIAlLETON, NEW YORK.
I oABmn'r.
Application filed December 14, 1922. Serial No. 606,809.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTONIO TOPAZZI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Stapleton, county of Richmond, Staten Is-.
for concealing the same within the cabinet by a provlslon of means affording the use of the top of the cabinet in un nterrupted surface, as for table or like purposes.
A further object of the invention, is to provide the top of the cabinet with a folding member for movement to horizontal position for an extension of the top for table purposes and also for use with the sewing machine.
A furtherobject of the invention isthe provisionof drawers at the ends and sides of the cabinet for enclosing the sewing material, for a collapsible holder for embroidering, for a laundering ironfor use with the cabinet top.
Further features and objects of the invention will be understood from the following detail description and accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a top perspective view of the cabinet, the sewing machine being concealed and showing the folding member hinged to the top and in its folded position;
Fig. 2 is a detail top perspective view of the cabinet, showing the folding member extended to its horizontal position; this view also shows the sewing machine head swung upwardly to its position in use and held in such position by the slide member of the top.
Fig. v3 is a detail top perspective view of the cabinet showing the folding top member moved to its extended position and the slide member of the top moved to its inner position to present an interrupted surface for the top and also concealing the sewing machine; this figure also shows the drawer for;jl the laundering iron in open position; an
Fig. 4 is a perspective top view of the cabinet showingthe hinge member of the top moved to its reduced position; this figare also shows the brackets of the folding member moved" to their-closed position; in this figure is also shown in open position a drawer for a collapsible frame, for embroidering and the like, in elevated position.
Referring to the drawings, the cabinet embodying my invention comprises the body portion 1 having the feet 2; the ornamentation of the body portion and feet may be varied as desired. Preferably, the brace 3 is provided which may extend between the legs 2.
The top of the cabinet, see Fig. 2, com
prises the main top portion 4 having adjacent one side the slide top member 5, preferably formed of the mutually hinged portions 5 5. As will be noted from Fig. 3,
when the slide top member 5 is in its inward position, the parts 5, 5 form an interrupted surface with the main top portion 4 to provide in use a continuously smooth top as an entirety.
The sewing machine head 6, see F ig. 2, is mounted on a suitable base 'Twhich may be hinged to the under face of thetop 4 from the edge 8 by any suitable hinging means and providingfor the elevation of the machine head 6 upon. manually grasping the same. The base 7 of the sewing machine head 6 is locked in position by pushing the slide member 5 into engagement therewith. For such purpose, the slide portion 5 is provided at its edge 9 with an extending flange to be received within a correspond ingly recess at the edge 10 of the base 7. Upon grasping the slide member 5 to pull the same outwardly as viewed from Fig. 2, and grasping the sewing machine head 6 by the hand, the sewing machine head 6 may be permitted to drop downwardly to its concealed position, whereupon the slide 5 is pushed inwardly to fully close the opening of the compartment for concealing the sewing machine, and to'bring the slide 5 fully within the contour of the table top 4.
Preferably, the table top 4: is provided with the folding extension member 11, mounted on suitable hinges 12, 12, see Fig. 4. The swing brackets 13, 13 when swung outwardly, serve to hold the folding extension member 11 in horizontal position and in extension of the cabinet top 4, as is indicated in Fig. 3.
The cabinet may be provided with any desired drawers 14 for containing paraphernalia for sewing and also with a slide drawer 15 for receiving and concealing a launder.-
ing iron 16. The top of the cabinet may be employed as a support for laundering; the smooth top surface of the cabinet may be extended by unfolding the hinged member 11 and by the slide member '5.
The cabinet may also be provided with a drawer 17 in which may be located the frame 18 for holding an embroidering frame 18, which may be of collapsible construction to afford concealment within the drawer when the drawer is closed.
As will be noted from Fig. 2, when the sewing machine is in its raised position, the hinge joint between the parts 5*, 5 is located substantially in alignment of the edge 19 of the top 4 to enable the outer hinge portion 5 to be swung downwardly, at the upper edge 19 of the top 4:, as indicated in dashed outline 5.
As appears from the drawings, the brace 3 may be cut away at the four sides of the cabinet and such brace may be formed of wood and painted or otherwise ornamented as desired, to preserve the appearance of the brace 3 and also provide a rest for the foot or feet of the operator.
IVhereas I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof, it will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim.
1. A combined sewing machine cabinet and table comprising the combination of a body, legs supporting the same, a top for said "body and comprising a main top portion having an opening and further comprising a slide portion located on a certain side of the top and arranged when in closed position to close said opening and. present a smooth surface substantially continuous with the surface of said main top portion, and a base for supporting a sewing machine head mounted to be concealed within said body portion when in lowered position and arranged to be held by said slide portion when raised upwardly within said opening, and an extension top member hinged to said top at a side thereof lateral of said certain side.
2. A combined sewing machine cabinet and table comprising the combination of a body, legs supporting the same, a top for said body and comprising a main top portion having an opening and further comprising a slide portion located on a certain side of the top and arranged when in closed position to close said opening and present a smooth surface substantially continuous with the surface of said main top portion, said slide portion comprising a plurality of interconnected slide elements, the outer slide element being hinged to its adjacent slide element in substantial. alignment with the edge of said certain side of the top when said slide'portion is in its outward position, and a base for supporting a sewing machine head mounted to be concealed within said body portion when in lowered position and arranged to be held by said slide portion when raised upwardly within said opening, and an extension top member hinged to said top at a side thereof lateral of said certain side. i
In/testimony whereof I have signed this specification this 28th day of October 1922.
ANTONIO TOPAZZI.
