State of'lennsylvanim have invented a new and Improved Combined Cabinet and Table, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined cabinet and table adapted to use either as a table proper or as a cabinet with the top partially removed to uncover the cabinet, normally arranged to lie beneath the top, and within which there is formed a receptacle for work and materials, and within which there are also provided drawers and compartments suitably arranged for holding the different articles which it may be desirable to use. Details of the internal arrangement of the cabinet may, of course, be modified in many respects to suit the convenience of the user.

The purpose of my present invention is to provide such a combined table and cabinet that it will have the appearance of a table when closed and when opened will afford a cabinet for accessible and orderly storage of the articles and the work upon which the user is engaged, and one in which the cabinet shall be capableof use not only as a cabinet but in which a removable lower section of the cabinet may be'used as a foot stool and in which, when the parts are all in assembled relation, the foot stool forms the legs and support for the combined cabinet and table proper.

In carrying out my invention I provide a cabinet of the I general character, as above indicated, formed in two sections, the lower section of which is removably secured to the upper section and forming, when in position, a support for the upper section and when-removed it is adapted to use as a foot stool. The cover which I provide for the cabinet is adapted to use as a table top and is slidable upon the body of the cabinet so as to nearly or quite uncover the cabinet and the top is provided with a foldable leg and bracing members therefor, the leg and the bracing members adapted in folded position to lie under the cover and over the top of the cabinet upon which the cover member slides. the cover or table top proper in such a way as to extend or increase the length of the cover or top when desired. In the construction of the cabinet and table I have found it desirableto provide new connecting and attaching means especially adapted to permit the desired cooperation of the several parts of the cabinet and table.

The accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment of my invention in a combined cabinet and extension table are as follows Figure 1 is a side view of the cabinet and table with the extension top attached thereto and with the main top moved to its eX- treme extended position resting at one end upon the body of the cabinet. Fig. 2 is a view of the parts shown in Fig. 1 as seen from the left. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cabinet and table with the extension member removed and with the cover or top in ts normal central position adapting the devlceto use as a table. .Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cabinet with the cover removed.

Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the parts seen in Fig. 4: taken along the. line wy of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of part of the cabinet near the top thereof and shows the same in section taken along the line wy of F ig. 4. Fig. 7 is a view of the cabinet proper as seen from the un der side. Fig. 8 is a top or plan view and Fig. 9 is a side view of the lower section of the cabinet when removed for use as a foot stool. Fig. 10 shows, in perspective, one of the removable panel sections adapted to be ornamented to improve the appearance of the cabinet.

Referring to the drawings, in carrying body portion or upper section D of the cabinet all four sides cl of which are formed alike and have corner pieces 0Z arranged on each of the four edges of each of the sides cl. These members al are recessed or rabbeted on their rear sides to provide grooves for receiving the panel pieces P which are made removable for the purpose of cleaning or changing the ornamentation thereon. The constructlon nthis respect is indicated more clearly in Figs. 5 and 6, while such a panel side of the cabinet section D there is provided a reinforcing member F engaging under the inwardly extending cap member 658. On two sides of the section D and around the inside thereof there are provided suitable receptacles V, V V and V and within the receptacle V there may be provided a cushion for pins. These receptacles are formed between the sides d near the top thereof and the partition members 2;, 0 and o .The receptacle V is deeper than the receptacles V, V and V as indicated more clearly in Fig. 6. The bottoms v of the receptacles, V, V and V are on the same level with a ledge member E carrying suitably upwardly extending pins 0 for receiving spools of thread. Beneath thereceptacle V there is seen a drawer member N provided with a suitable handle a, while under the receptacle V there is similarly located a drawer N also provided with a handle or knob 72, and beneath these drawers N and N there is provided a supporting member E resting upon a reinforcing cleat m Reinforcing corner pieces m are provided inside of the case extending from the bottom B thereof upwardly to the reinforcing members m and a spacing block m is provided at the left hand end of .the drawer N, as seen in Fig. 5. The main body of the cabinet section D comprises a receptacle Z which may be used for receiving and storing the work. V

The cabinet section D is recessed on-the under side, as seen in Fig. 5, being provided with reinforcing cleats b engaging under the bottom B, the space within which is adapted to receive the upper portion of the lower'or foot stool section G of the cabinet, the upper portion of which latter is upholstered as indicated at G in Figs. 8 and 9.

This lower or foot stool section G is provided with legs 9 shouldered at their upper ends to provide upwardly extending tenons 9 into which are suitably framed the s de members 9 and the bottom 9 for inclosmg and supporting the upholstered portion G and also for securing the legs together in proper position.

Extending downwardly from the bottom 9 there are seen four screws a preferably round headed and each adapted to be engaged by the outer and slotted end of a corresponding link U pivotally secured by a similar screw to the underside of the re inforcing cleats b of the upper cabinet section D in such a way, as indicated in Fig. 7, that these links may be used to lock the lower orfoot stool section G to the upper section D. On the outside of the cabinet section D and on each side thereof centrally disposed between the legs 9 of thelower section there are provided ornamental foot members 1) adapted to form suitable supporting feet for the upper section of the cabinet when removed from the lower sec: tion or foot stool.

Onthe cabinet section D there is .slidably supported the table top T which is provided with downwardly extending side frame pieces 25 having suitable inwardly extending flanges, not shown, along their lower edges engaging under the outwardly extending cap pieces (1 of the cabinet, and, also, across its ends with downwardl pieces H of the same wi th as the pieces 25 and cooperating therewith to form a continuous frame work around the under side of the top T. One or both of the end frame pieces H are hinged in place and adapted to swing upward against the. under side of the table topto permit the same being slid on and off of the cabinet section. At one end of the top T there is also secured by means of a hinge a leg A which supports one end of the table top from the floor when such top is in extended position, as shown in Fig. 1, and which is swung upward so as to lie against the under side of the top T and unseen when the cover member and cabinet occupy the relative positions indicated in Fig. 3. As the particularconstruction of the table top is not claimed-as a part of this inven tion, the manner of hinging the above menextending 7 frame tioned swinging members thereto has not been shown. 7

WVhen, for any reason, there is needed a longer table top than the main top T, the extension T may be made use. of. When, however, the device is used as a combined cabinet and table the top T may be moved to the position, substantially as indicated in Fig. 1, either with or Without the extension top T, which latter, when used, is secured in the position, also, such as indicated in Fig. 1, and in the manner already described. When the device is used as a combined extension table and cabinet the sections D and G of the cabinet are kept together. When, however, the use of the top T or the extension thereof may both be dispensed with the lower section G may be used as a foot stool, while the upper section D is supported by means of the foot pieces 6, on the floor near the user.

What I claim is:

1. In a device of the character described, a cabinet section having a recess formed in r the under side thereof, legs for supporting said section, such legs being carried by a base section, an upholstered top on said base section adapted to engage within said recess, and means provided on the two sections for removably connecting them.

2. In a device of the character described, a cabinet section having a recess formed in the under side thereof, legs for supporting said section, such legs being carried by a base section, a reduced top on said base section adapted to engage within said recess, means provided on the two sections for removably connecting them, and foot members on the sides of said cabinet section for supporting the same when removed from said base section.

3. In a combined cabinet and table, a cabinet section having a table top slidable thereon and removable therefrom and a recess formed in the under side thereof, legs for supporting said section, such legs being carried by a base section, a reduced top on said base section adapted to engage Within said recess, means provided on the two sections for removably connecting them, and foot members on the sides of said cabinet section for supporting the same when removed from said base section.
