Be it known that I, MARGRET BERRY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Trunk and Dressing-Table, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlugs.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combination trunks and dressers, and has for its object to construct a trunk with a dresser attachment in such a manner that when the trunk is closed the attachment may be lowered within the trunk in position to serve as a partition or tray and which may when it is desired to use the same as a dresser be easily and conveniently elevated and supported in position for such use.

With these objects in View the invention resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In describingthe invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification,and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved device, showing the trunk opened and the dresser attachment elevated in position for use. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the table portion of the dresser attachment detached from the trunk, showing the mirror folded thereon. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a part of one of the adjustable uprights or standards, also showing a part of the trunk-wall. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a part of the table portion of the dresser attachment, showing a modified form of construction. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of a part of one of the uprights or standards as they are constructed to be employed in connection with the table construction shown in Fig. 4:.

To put my invention into practice, I provide a trunk-body 1, which may be of the usual form of construction and has the ordinary hinged lid 2. The usual tray may be the uprights or standards.

dispensed with, and to the inner face of the trunk-body I secure a series of'keepers 3. These keepers are secured to the end walls of the trunk-bodyin pairs, one above the other, and they receive the standards or uprights 4, which in the construction shown in Fig. 1 are provided on their upper ends with tenons 5, thus forming shoulders 6 adjacent to the upper ends of the uprights or standards. These uprights or standards are also provided in one edge with openings 7 to receive a locking-pin 8, which passes through the keeper 3 and for convenience sake is preferably attached to a chain 9 or equivalent connection, which is secured in the wall of the trunkbody. A series of the apertures 7 are provided, whereby the uprights or standards may be elevated to and retained at any desired position. One of the locking-pins 8 is provided for'each standard, as will be apparent. A table or dresser top 10 is provided near each of its corners with an oblong opening 11 to receive the tenons 5, this table or dresser top resting upon the shoulders 6 of Mounted on top of this table or dresser top are keepers 12, which serve two purposes-namely, to hold the mirror 14 in a supported position, as seen in Fig. l, and, secondly, to hold the mirror in a folded position, as seen in Fig. 2-when it is desired to close the trunk. The supporting-legs 15 of this mirror rest upon the upper face of the table or dresser top, as seen in Fig.1, and the mirror is retained in an upright position by means of the hinged legs or braces 16, the free ends of which are inserted into the keepers 12, so as to hold the mirror upright, as seen in Fig. 1. By reason of the legs or braces 16 being secured to the legs 15 by hinges 17, as shown, the legs 16 may be folded flat against the legs 15 and said legs 16 inserted into the keepers 12, as seen in Fig. 2, so as to hold the mirror against displacement when folded. I

In Fig. 4 I show a modified form of table or dresser top 18. In lieu of the openings 11, near each corner of this form of table-top, I

provide adjustable pins 19, one near each cornor of the table or dresser top. These pins engage in notches 20, provided therefor in the upper ends of the standards 21. In this construction these standards 21 are adjustable vertically and are held in the adjusted position by the pins 8 in the same manner as are the standards 4. The journal-pins 19 are adjustable longitudinally, so that they may be shoved in against the ends of the table or dresser top to permit the folding or closing of the attachment and the closing of the trunk. When it is desired to close the trunk, the securing-pins 8 are withdrawn from the standards, so that the latter will descend within the trunk, carrying the table-top therewith, the mirror is folded down on top of the trunk, as seen in Fig. 2, and the lid may then be closed. The attachment, it will be observed, serves the purpose of a tray or partition when the trunk is closed. In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the table-top may be lifted oif its uprights or standards, the latter lowered, and the tabletop then placed within the trunk, which may readily be accomplished when the journal-pins are pushed inwardly.

It will be obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A trunk provided at its corners with upper and lower keepers, adjustable standards secured in said keepers, locking means for securing the standards in different positions in said keepers, a table secured to the standards at points below the upper ends of said standards, a mirror foldably mounted on the table, and the ends of said standards extended above the table, said end portions adapted to extend above the level of the mirror in its folded position to protect the same from the lid, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the type set forth, the combination of a trunk, a table therein and a mirror arranged thereon, adjustable standards for said table, keepers for the standards, locking means for the same whereby the standards may be secured at any desired height, the end portions of the standards extending above the table adapted to prevent the crushing in of the top upon said mirror, foldable means carrying said mirror mounted upon the table, said end portions of the standards extending above the mirror in the folded position of its supporting means, substantially as described.
