Application February 16, 1939, Serial No. 256,656 (01. 155-423) 3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in furniture and has particular reference to a cabinet attachment for an article of furniture, such as a sofa, davenport, chair, or the like.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved article of furniture such as a sofa, couch, arm-chair, bed, or the like, of simple, practical and attractive appearance, wherein a side member of the article has associated therewith a cabinet, or like device, which is capable of being adjusted to different positions relative to said side member and in which provision may be made for containing various articles, such as books, a source of illumination, and the like, that will be useable when the cabinet is adjusted to one of its positions.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for purpose of illustration, is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sofa, constructed in accordance with the present invention, with cabinet attachment shown in a lowered position.
Figure 2- is a fragmentary perspective View showing the cabinet in raised position.
Figure 3 is a similar view taken from another angle.
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section through the cabinet and associated side member of the sofa, the dotted line indicating the raised position of the cabinet.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section on the line 55 of Figure 4, and,
Figure 6 is an elevation, partly in section, showing the mechanism for supporting the cabinet in raised position.
Referring now to the figures, a sofa is generally indicated by the numeral 1, and comprises side members 8 with either or both of which is associated a cabinet generally indicated by the numeral 9. The cabinet 9 is constructed so as to be of substantially the same height and width as the associated side member 8 and preferably comprises a framework generally indicated by the numeral l0, and consisting of a bottom I l, outer and inner side members l2 and I3, and a top M. A covering l5 of upholstery or like material may be provided for the framework in conformity with the covering for the article of furniture. The framework may further include a horizontal partition I6 joining the side members l2 and I3 and said partition may be utilized as a book shelf or the like. Arranged behind the top [4, along the inner side of the framework, there is also provided a panel I! which extends the width of the framework, and which is provided with an opening is therein, in which may be mounted a lamp casing l9, having a lamp 253 disposed'therein in such manner as to give indirect lighting through the opening l8 when the cabinet 9 is raised, as in Figures 2 and 3. An arm rest 2| is horizontally hinged at 22 to the inner edge of the shelf H5 and when the cabinet is in itslowered position, as in Figure 4, said rest 2| is vertically disposed in alinement with the panel I7 and held in frictional engagement therewith by a stud 23. When the cabinet is raised, said arm rest may be swung to a horizontal position as 'inFigure'ii, in which position the same will be supported by the upper edge of the side member 8. The front vertical wall of the cabinet may have mounted therein an ash receiver such as indicated at 24,
To guide the cabinet in its movements to the raised and lowered positions thereof, the side member 8 may have secured thereto adjacent its vertical edges the angular tracks 25, the outer webs of which may be engaged in grooves 26 formed in the front and rear walls 21 of the framework Ill. The base of the sofa l is extended outwardly beyond the side member 8 to form a base support 28 for the cabinet 9, and secured upon the upper surface of said support are the slotted brackets 29, having slideably connected thereto the lower ends of two cross levers 30, the upper edges of which are pivoted at iii to the undersurface of the bottom I l of the cabinet. At the point of intersection of the levers 30, one
of them is longitudinally slotted as indicated at 32 and the other is provided with a pin 33 engaging in said slot, The upper portions of the levers 30 are connected by a retractile coil spring 34 which operates to yieldably maintain the cabinet in the raised position of Figure 6 after said cabinet has been lifted to the position of Figures 2 and 3. Said spring also acts as a counterbalancing element to assist in the raising of the cabinet after the lifted movement has been started. When fully raised, pins 35 at the lower ends of the levers 30 are engaged in the inner ends of the slots in the bracket 29 and will thus maintain the cabinet in its elevated position until said pins are disengaged from said ends, whereupon downward pressure upon the cabinet will cause the levers 30 to assume a substantially horizontal position, as shown in Figure 4, and the spring 34 will be expanded so that the same will be effective to exert its counterbalancing action when next the cabinet is raised.
Though I have described the invention in terms of its embodiment in a sofa, I wish it to be understood that it is equally applicable to an armchair, couch, bed, day bed or the like, and, indeed to any article of furniture in connection with which it may be desirable to employ it. The precise scope of the invention is to be determined, not by the above description, which is illustrative rather than restrictive, but rather by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An article of furniture which comprisesa base member, a side member fixedly mounted on said base member, said side member having a,
horizontal upper margin and a substantially vertical outer face, vertical guides on said side member, a cabinet having an opening on the inner side thereof adjacent said outer face which cabinet is arranged for vertical movement along said guides between a lowered position in which said opening is closed by said side member and an elevated position in which said opening is exposed above said side member, said cabinet having an upper wall and a relatively flat member hinged to said cabinet which fiat member in the lowered position of the cabinet is vertically arranged and which in the elevated position assumes a horizontal position above the upper margin of said side member and supported therefrom.
2. An article of furniture which comprises a base member, a side member fixedly mounted on said base member, said side member having a horizontal upper margin and a substantially vertical outer face, vertical guides on said side member, a cabinet having an opening on the inner side thereof adjacent said outer face, which cabinet is arranged for vertical movement along said guides between a lowered position in which said opening is closed by said side member and an elevated position in which said opening is exposed above said side member, said cabinet having an upper wall and a relatively flat member movably supported from said cabinet which in the elevated position of the cabinet is capable of assuming a horizontal position and in which at least a portion thereof is above the upper margin of said side member and supported therefrom.
\3. An article of furniture which comprises a base member, a side member fixedly mounted on said base member, said side member having a horizontal upper margin and a substantially vertical outer face, vertical guides on said side member, a cabinet having an opening on the side thereof adjacent said outer face, which cabinet is arranged for vertical'movement along said guides between a lowered position in which said opening is closed by said side member and an elevated position in which said opening is exposed above said side member, a horizontal shelf in said cabinet, a flap member hinged to said shelf and arranged to stand vertically when said cabinet is in said lowered position and to be swung outward of the cabinet into a horizontal position above the upper margin of said side member and supported therefrom when said cabinet is in the elevated position toexpose the interior of the cabinet for use.
