is adapted to be converted into a bed when suchuse is necessary.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture which is highly attractive in appearance while combining the dual function of a sofa or chair together with the back of a bed so as to enable additional sleeping facilities to be available for use at night, while these sleeping facilities can revert back to the folded embodiment of a chair or sofa for the ornamental and functional use thereof during times when the sleeping facilities are not needed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a convertible sofa or chair bed which has means integrally formed therewith for storing blankets, comforters, and other bed clothes therein in a neat and satisfactory manner.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a sofa or chair bed which has suitable cushion sections provided with conical springs for insuring cross abutment thereof when they are in juxtaposition with each other.
Still further objects of the invention reside in the provision of this article of furniture which is strong, durable, and efficient in operation, ornamental and attractive in appearance, comparatively easy and inexpensive to manufacture, and which is relatively easy to open.
These, together with various ancillary objects of the invention which will become'apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this convertible chair or sofa bed, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention shown in its extended position with parts thereof being broken away to show other parts in greater detail;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the convertible chair or sofa bed, with the various hinged elements being shown in an intermediate stage of folding;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the invention shown in position for use as a bed;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of the chair and sofa bed as shown in Figure 3, and taken along the longitudinal axis of the invention;
Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the article of furniture comprising the present invention shown in a folded position;
2 Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view of the invention as taken along the longitudinal axis thereof;
Figure 7 is a partial front elevational view of the convertible sofa or chair back;
Figure 8 is a partial top plan view of the invention in a closed position; and,
Figure 9 is a sectional detail as taken along 9-9 in Figure 4.
Continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral It! generally designates the convertible chair or sofa bed comprised in the present invention. This article of furniture has several main portions which are pivotally hinged together.
This article of furniture comprises a base member l2 having a front wall M, a rear wall [6, spaced side walls 18, and a bottom wall 20 secured together. Attached to the rear wall l6 and extending rearwardly therefrom is a support member 22 on which stop member 24 is secured.
The stop member 24 is attached at its other end to a member 26 extending upwardly from the bottom wall 20. Secured to the member 26, the support member 22 on the stop member 24 and extending thereabove is a cover 28 forming a casing 30 in which the back member 32 can be selectively rotated thereto. The back member 32 comprises a head board 34 and a cushion portion 36. The head board is pivotally secured to the rear wall l5 by hinges 38. Secured to the cover 28 is a bracket 40. Terminally secured to the top of the head board 34 and to the bracket 40 is a strip of upholstery fabric 42 to enhance the ornamental appearance of the article of furniture when such is in the extended position by substantially closing the opening through which the head board 34 is rotated into the recess. Further, this strip 42 prevents the entrance of fine articles into the recess so as to relatively insure that the device can be folded to its closed position.
Pivotally attached by hinges 44 to the front wall M of the base member I 2 is the intermediate member generally designated by reference numeral 46 which comprises a cushion portion 48 of substantially trapezoidal cross section, to which cushion portion there is attached arm rests 50 which are provided for engagement with the side walls l8 when the device is in the closed position. There is provided and attached to the rear wall l6 a support member 52 designed to retain the cushion 43 when the device is in the closed position as shown in Figure 6.
Pivotally secured to the intermediate member 46 by hinges 54 is a seat member generally indicated by reference numeral 56. This seat member comprises a cushion portion 58, a pair of opposed legs 60 and an upholstered front board 62 extending between and secured to the legs 60.
The cushion portions 58 and 36 are provided with inclined sides 65 and 68 respectively to inti mately engage theginclined sides '6 8jand T "of: the:
