Application November 29, 1948, Serial No. 62,529
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a sofa, and has for its principal object the provision of a single, unitary piece of furniture which will serve as a sofa and two end tables.
Another object is to so construct the device that the sofa and the arms thereof will be deeply upholstered, and the table tops will have a smooth, hard surface for solidly supporting any desired articles.
A still further object is to so construct the table tops that they will be surrounded by raised upholstery to prevent lamps and other articles from being accidentally displaced therefrom.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and efficiency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the improved sofa;
Fig. 2 is a back view thereof;
Fig. 3 is an end view thereof; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged, detail, cross-section, taken on the line 4-4, Fig. 1.
The improved sofa consists of an upholstered seat portion In extending at its extremities beneath inverted, L-shaped arm portions II. An upholstered back portion l2 extends along the rear edge of the seat portion l between the two arm portions II. A table top [3 is indented into the top of each of the arm portions I l.
The entire structure is supported on an integral framework 14 which supports a top board l beneath the top of each of the arm portions. The table tops l3 may be of any desired material, such as plywood, glass or mirror mounted directly upon the boards I 5.
The borders of the tops of the arms are padded, as shown at I8, the padding being continued downwardly on the inside of the arms to the seat portion in, and on the outside of the arms to the floor line.
The padding is covered by means of cover material ll extending upwardly and inwardly over the padding l6, and terminating around the periphery of the table top 13, to which the cover material is attached 'by means of suitable ornamental upholstery nails or tacks IS.
The seat portion III is supported on cross supports 19 and consists of the usual Webbing and burlap bottom 20 supporting seat springs 2| and padding 22 over which the cover material of the seat extends, as shown in Fig. 4.
It can be seen that the above construction provides two solid, smooth, level table tops 13 2 for supporting table lamps or any other desired articles. The rigidity of the table tops is not affected by the use of the seat portion ill, as the latter is not connected in any way with the table tops. The border of padding around the table tops prevents accidental displacement of lamps and other articles thereon.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent 1. A sofa comprising: an upholstered seat portion; an arm portion at each extremit of said seat portion, each of said arm portions extending upwardly at an end of said seat portion, thence extending inwardly over the extremity of said seat portion; a top board supported in said arm portions, said board extending over the extremities of said seat portion and outwardly therefrom; a table top of less area than said top board mounted on the mid-portion of the latter; and padded upholstering extending upwardly on the front, back, and sides of said arm portions, thence extending inwardly over said top board and terminating about the periphery of said table top.
2. A sofa comprising: an upholstered seat portion; an arm portion at each extremity of said seat portion, each of said arm portions extending upwardly at an end of said seat portion, thence extending inwardly over the extremity of said seat portion; a top board supported in said arm portions, said board extending over the extremities of said seat portion and outwardly therefrom; a table top of less area than said top board mounted on the mid-portion of the latter; and padded upholstering extending upwardly on the front, back, and sides of said arm portions, thence extending inwardly over said top board and terminating about the periphery of said table top; and an upholstered back portion extending along the back of said seat portion between said arm portions.
