Abstract

The invention relates to convertible settee-beds in which the backrest is connected with a base frame by a pair of side arms which are pivotally connected with both the backrest and the base frame in such a manner that the backrest can be swung from the backrest position at the back of the seat to the horizontal bed position in front of the seat.

0/0 Wfberg mvsmoa Attorney CONVERTIBLE CHAIR The invention thus consists of a settee-bed of the kind described wherein a bed covering is attached at one of its ends or sides to the base frame or seat portion and at its opposite end or side to the backrest in such a manner that the backrest automatically draws said bed covering over the seat portion and the backrest when the settee-bed is converted into a bed and automatically folds said bed covering back to its initial position when the backrest is swung back into the backrest or settee position.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to convertible settee-beds of the type in which the back rest of a settee is movable to a position in front of the seat portion to form a horizontal extension thereof and thus convert the settee into a bed.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The invention is concerned more particularly with a setteebed of this general type in which the backrest is connected with a base frame by a pair of side arms which are pivotally connected with both the backrest and the base frame in such a manner that the backrest can be swung from the backrest position at the back of the seat to the horizontal bed position in front of the seat.

With this type of settee-bed it is desirable to provide a bed covering which covers the upholstery of the seat and backrest when in the horizontal bed or reclining position and thereby protect the upholstery when the settee-bed is used as a bed and at the same time gives the reclining surface of the bed a smooth continuous appearance.

OBJECT OF THE INVENTION The object of the present invention is to provide a setteebed with such a covering which is automatically drawn over the reclining surface of the bed by the backrest when the latter is swung into the horizontal bed position and automatically folded back when the backrest is swung back into the backrest position.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The invention thus consists of a settee-bed of the kind described wherein a bed covering is attached at one of its ends or sides to the base frame or seat portion and at its opposite end or side to the backrest in such a manner that the backrest automatically draws said bed covering over the seat portion and the backrest when the settee-bed is converted into a bed and automatically folds said bed covering back to its initial position when the backrest is swung back into the backrest or settee position.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING In order that the invention may be more clearly understood one particular embodiment thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing in which:

FIG. I is a part sectional side elevation of a settee-bed according to the invention with the backrest in the settee position,

FIG. 2 is a similar view showing the backrest in an intermediate posotion during the conversion of the settee into a bed, and

FIG. 3 is a similar view after the settee has been converted into a bed.

SPECIFIC DESCRIPTION Referring to the drawing the settee-bed comprises a base frame 4 forming a seat which is provided with supporting legs 5, a backrest 6 which is connected with the base frame by a pair of side arms 7 (only one being shown in the drawing) which are each pivoted at one end to the base frame 4 at fulcrum 8 and at the other end to a fulcrum bracket 9 fixed at the top of the backrest 6 and dimensioned to allow the backrest to be swung forwardly to the bed position (alternate position). At the back of the settee-bed is fixed a backwall 11 having at its top horizontal edge a transverse reinforcing bar 12 which forms a support for the top of the backrest when the latter is in the settee position shown in FIG. 1. Rigidly fixed to the backrest 6 are legs (leg means) 13 which support said backrest on the ground when the backrest is in the bed position shown in FIG. 3 and which abuts the backwall 11 to support the bottom of the backrest in correct position when in the settee posi tion as shown in FIG. 1. It will be noted that when upwardly extending backrest is in the settee position shown in FIG. 1 said backrest, the rear wall 11 and the side armrest portions 14 combine to form an enclosed compartment 20 which can be used to store bedding when the settee-bed is not in use as a bed.

The settee-bed is also provided with a cushion 15 or cushions overlying the generally horizontal upper surface for use when the settee-bed is used as a settee.

In accordance with the present invention the settee bed is provided with a bed covering 16 for covering and protecting the upholstery of the seat and backrest when in the bed position as shown in FIG. 3. The bed covering 16 may consist of mattress ticking, relatively thin quilting or any other suitable material and is fitted to the settee-bed in such a manner that it is drawn over the horizontal reclining surface of the seat 4 and backrest 6 automatically when the backrest is swung from the position shown in FIG. 1, through the position shown in FIG. 2 to the position shown in FIG. 3, and is automatically returned to the position shown in FIG. 1 when the backrest is swung back into the settee position.

In order to achieve this automatic positioning and re-positioning of the bed covering, one end or side edge of said covering is attached along the upper edge of the base frame 4 of the seat at 17 and its opposite end or side edge is attached to the lower rear edge (as viewed in FIG. 1) of the backrest 6 at 18. The length or width of the covering from the point of attachment 17 to the point of attachment 18, and the manner in which it is returned to the position shown in FIG. 1, is such that said covering is stretched tightly over the reclining surface of the bed in the position shown in FIG. 3 and when in the folded back position shown in FIG. 1 the line of the fold, indicated at 19 in FIG. 1, is in such a position that it is positioned rearwardly of the front edge of the seat 4 and thus is invisible when the seat cushion or cushions 15 are placed on the seat. Thus the bed covering is completely invisible when the setteebed is in the settee position since the rear end or side is hidden with the enclosed compartment 20.

It should be noted that when the backrest 6 is swung from the FIG. 3 to the FIG. 1 position the underside of the backrest engages the bed covering just before it reaches the final position shown in FIG. 1 and thereby pushes part of the bed covering back into the enclosed compartment 20.

The bed covering 16 is preferably detachably connected at 17 and 18 to the base frame 4 and backrest 6 respectively so that it can easily be removed for laundering or replacing. It may be detachably connected in any suitable manner, for example by lacing, the edges of the covering being provided with a series of spaced eyelets through which a lace or cord can be threaded and tied to a suitable part of the base frame and backrest.

What I claim is:

1. A piece of furniture, comprising a seat with a generally horizontal upper surface; a rear wall extending upwardly behind said seat, said surface extending transversely to said rear wall at its junction therewith; a backrest extending generally surface; leg means connected with said backrest on a rear surface thereof opposite said front surface, said leg means coming to rest on the ground in said alternate position; and a bed covering fixedly attached at one of its ends to a rear edge of said seat at said junction and at its opposite end to an underside of said backrest near said leg means, said bed covering overlying said seat and said backrest in said alternate position and being folded over said seat in said seating position, with a foldline lying between the forward and rearward edges of said upper surface of said seat, and a cushion adapted to cover said foldline.

The piece of furniture defined in claim 1 wherein said bed covering is detachably connected to said seat and said backrest with a lacing, the length of the bed covering between its points of attachment to said seat and said backrest in said alternate position being arranged to maintain the covering stripped tightly over said seat and said front surface of said backrest.

Claims

1. A piece of furniture, comprising a seat with a generally horizontal upper surface; a rear wall extending upwardly behind said seat, said surface extending transversely to said Rear wall at its junction therewith; a backrest extending generally upwardly from said upper surface in a seating position, a pair of arms pivoted to said seat at a first pair of fulcra and pivoted to said backrest at a second pair of fulcra, the spacing of said pairs of fulcra being sufficient to allow said backrest to be swung forwardly from said seating position into an alternate position in which a front surface facing forwardly in said seating position is turned upwardly and is coplanar with said upper surface; leg means connected with said backrest on a rear surface thereof opposite said front surface, said leg means coming to rest on the ground in said alternate position; and a bed covering fixedly attached at one of its ends to a rear edge of said seat at said junction and at its opposite end to an underside of said backrest near said leg means, said bed covering overlying said seat and said backrest in said alternate position and being folded over said seat in said seating position, with a foldline lying between the forward and rearward edges of said upper surface of said seat, and a cushion adapted to cover said foldline.
