Description
Dec. 25, 1956 H, Tz 2,774,977
CONVERTIBLE SOFA Filed April 15, 1954 IN VEN TOR. HENRY Ml NTZ BY fizz/saw ATTORNEYS United States Patent CONVERTIBLE SOFA Henry Mintz, Newton, Mass., assignor to New England Bidding Co., Medford, Mass., a corporation of Massac usetts Application April 15, 1954, Serial No. 423,317 1 Claim. (Cl. -12) This invention relates to sofas and the like articles of furniture having a back rest or cushion, and its principal object is to provide a neat, attractive article having a back rest or cushion which i longitudinally adjustable and which, if desired, may be readily removed thereby not only allowing the back to be adjusted so as to harmonize with the surroundings, but also permitting its removal so as to convert the sofa into a couch or bed.
Further objects relate to various features of construction and will be apparent from a consideration of the following description and the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective of a sofa constructed in accordance with the present invention as viewed from the front;
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the sofa as viewed from the rear;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the rear part of the sofa;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the rear of the sofa; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective of the back rest.
The embodiment herein shown for the purpose of illustration comprises an elongate body 1 which may be of conventional design and construction having the usual mattress or built-in spring assembly which carries appropriate upholstery extending about its top, front and side walls, the body 1 being supported by front and rear legs 3 and 4 or the like members at or spaced from its opposite ends.
Extending along the rear face of the body 1 is a bar or the like member 6, the ends of which are seated on notched portions at the upper ends of the rear legs 4 so as to hold the bar 6 spaced outwardly from the rear face of the body 1, thus providing an elongate slot 8 I (Fig. 3). An intermediate spacer 10 is interposed between the center of the bar 6 and body 1 so as not only to prevent the bar 6 from bowing outwardly, but also to provide a stop member.
A back rest 12, here shown asa cushion having a generally wedge-shaped cross section, has a length substantially less than that of the body 1 and is adjustably mounted on'the body so as to be moved from one position to the other. To this end the rear face of the back rest I 2,774,911 Patented Dec. 25, 1956 "ice is provided with a pair of depending legs or supporting members 14 and 15, the ends of which project into the slot -8, the design of the parts being such that the lower end portions of the legs -14 and 15 have a tight sliding fit in slot 8.
The length of the back rest and the position of the legs 14 and 15 relative to the spacer 10 are such that when the back rest is symmetrically positioned on the body 1, the legs 14 and 15 are equi-distant from the spacer '10, as shown by the full lines in Figs. 1 and 2; but when the back rest is slid toward either end of the body 1, the spacer 10 limits its movements so that when one of the legs engages spacer 10 the opposite end of the back rest is flush with the end of the body 1, as shown by the broken lines in Figs. 1 and 2.
With this construction and arrangement of par-ts the back rest may be. longitudinally adjusted to harmonize with the surroundings and if desired the sofa may be readily converted into 'a couch or bed simply by withdrawing the legs 14 and 15 of the back rest from the slot 8. Since the bar 6 and associated parts are at the rear of the body 1, they are normally concealed from view and hence do not detract from the appearance of the sofa.
While I have shown and described one desirable embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
Iclaim:
A sofa comprising an elongated body section having front and rear walls, front and rear legs respectively secured to said front and rear walls at points spaced inwardly of their ends, the upper ends of said rear legs having parts extending outwardly to provide notched portions spaced from the outer face of said rear wall, a relatively rigid horizontally extending bar having its opposite ends secured in said notched portions and defining with said rear wall an elongate slot, a spacer block interposed between and secured to the center of said bar and rear wall so as to hold said bar from bowing outwardly and to provide a stop, and a backrest of lesser length than said body section, said backrest having spaced depending supporting members secured to its rear face with their lower end portions projecting into and having a tight sliding fit in said elongate slot, said backrest being slidable lengthwise of the sofa until one of said supporting members contacts said stop.
